Radiodiffusion Télévision Sénégalaise (RTS) is the Senegalese public broadcasting company. History The French military opened the first radio broadcasting station in Dakar in 1932. It began broadcasting civilian programming in 1939. The origins of RTS are in Radio-Dakar, created in 1950, that broadcast eight hours per day. In 1951 two channels appear: Dakar Inter and Dakar Afrique, broadcast to listeners across western Africa. In 1959, the fusion of Mali and Senegal into the Mali Federation causes the creation of Radio Mali, its bases being in Radio Inter. On August 20, 1960, when Senegal separated from the Mali Federation, Radio Mali became Radio Senegal with two channels: one national and the other international. 2sTV is the second television channel of Senegal. It is owned 100% by El hadji Ibrahima Ndiaye, the administrator of the channel. Beginnings In 2003, the first programmes were shown on the UHF23 channel. The station was at first a partnership between the historic television channel of Senegal, Radiodiffusion Télévision Sénégalaise (RTS) and a private group, "Origine SA". The channel was named: RTS2S. Development The channel showed its independence with a new name: 2sTV. The programmes it showed were more focused on culture, freer, and newer. ''Khar Bii'' ("This Sheep" in Wolof) is a television show that has aired annually on 2sTV in Senegal since 2009. As of 2012, it was the most popular show in Senegal. The show is a contest to locate the most beautiful ram in the country and airs each year in the lead-up to the Muslim holiday Eid al-Adha (known locally as ''Tabaski''). Sheep play an important role in Senegalese culture. They are popular pets, often living inside their owners' homes. In addition, sheep are important to the festival of Eid al-Adha, which commemorates Abraham's near sacrifice of his son (and ultimate sacrifice of a ram in Isaac's place). Nearly every Senegalese Muslim family with sufficient resources sacrifices a sheep to celebrate Eid al-Adha; over 700,000 sheep are purchased annually for this purpose.
