Telephone Numbers In Finland
All of Finland, including Åland, has the same country code, +358. Finland's numbering plan was reorganised in 1996, with the number of area codes being reduced, and the trunk code being changed from 9 to 0. This meant that the area code for Helsinki also changed: Geographic area codes ''Source:'' Finnish Communications Regulatory Authority' Non-geographic numbers Mobile numbers Finnish mobile numbers start with 04x, 0457 or 050. The format for mobile telephone numbers is ''04x 123 45 67'' or ''0457 123 45 67'' or ''050 123 45 67''. When called from a different country, the format is ''+ 358 4x 123 45 67'' or ''+ 358 50 123 45 67''. Most commonly 7 digits are used for the subscriber number. The first three digits previously indicated the mobile operator but mobile number portability has been implemented and any prefix can now be associated with any operator, 040 (was owned by TeliaSonera) and 050 (was owned by Elisa, formerly Radiolinja) are most common prefixes. 042 and ...

FICORA
The Finnish Communications Regulatory Authority, abbreviated to FICORA ( fi, Viestintävirasto, sv, Kommunikationsverket), was the public authority responsible for communication regulations in Finland. FICORA regulated radio frequencies and television broadcast permits, supervised the operation of Internet service providers, and managed the .fi domain zone. FICORA was headquartered in Helsinki. FICORA acted as the national telecommunications regulatory body, representing Finland in ITU and ETSI. It was one of the standards writing bodies working with the Finnish Standards Association. It was founded in 1988 as the State Agency for Telecommunications Administration (THK; fi, Telehallintokeskus, sv, Teleförvaltningscentralen) by combining the regulatory divisions of the Finnish PTT agency ( fi) and that of Yleisradio (YLE) into a single agency, and adopted its name in 2001. FICORA, the Finnish Transport Safety Agency (Trafi), and certain functions of the Finnish Transport Ag ...

International Call Prefix
An international call prefix, international dial-out code or international direct dial code (IDD code) is a trunk prefix that indicates an International call, international phone call. In the dialling sequence, the prefix precedes the country calling code (and, further, the carrier code, if any, and the destination telephone number). The international call prefix is part of the telephone numbering plan of every country. Standardisation The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) recommends the sequence 00 as a standard for an international call prefix, and this has been implemented by the majority of countries. A significant number of countries, however, use 011 as the international call prefix – mainly countries that follow the North American Numbering Plan. Certain Former Soviet Union, post-Soviet states continue to use 810 which was the universal IDD code across the Soviet Union. Other prefixes (000, 001, 0011, 119, etc.) are also in use in a small number of countries. ...

Finnish Markka
The markka ( fi, markka; sv, mark; sign: Mk; ISO code: FIM, typically known outside Finland as the Finnish mark) was the currency of Finland from 1860 until 28 February 2002, when it ceased to be legal tender. The mark was divided into 100 pennies ( fi, penni; sv, penni), abbreviated as "p". At the point of conversion, the rate was fixed at €1 = Mk 5.94573. The mark was replaced by the euro (€), which had been introduced, in cash form, on 1 January 2002. This was after a transitional period of three years, when the euro was the official currency but only existed as "book money" outside of the monetary base. The dual circulation period, when both the Finnish mark and the euro had legal tender status, ended on 28 February 2002. Etymology The name "markka" was based on a medieval unit of weight. Both "markka" and "penni" are similar to words used in Germany for that country's former currency, based on the same etymological roots as the Deutsche Mark and pfennig. ...

Radiolinja
Radiolinja was a Finnish GSM operator founded on September 19, 1988. On March 27, 1991, the world's first GSM phone call was made on Radiolinja's network. The network was opened for commercial use on July 1, 1991. Radiolinja's slogan was ''So that Finns could talk more''; it became famous through an advertising campaign. When Radiolinja launched, Finland's incumbent mobile operator, Telecom Finland (later changed to Sonera, now part of Sweden's TeliaSonera) was already operating a first generation mobile network on the NMT technology. Thus, Radiolinja's launch was also the start of mobile telecom competition in Europe. Several global firsts happened on the Radiolinja network, including the world's first person-to-person SMS text message, sent in 1993; the world's first fixed-mobile service bundle, launched in 1996; and the world's first paid downloadable mobile content, a ringtone, in 1998. Radiolinja's original investors included the Finnet Group, a consortium composed of a numb ...

Nordic Mobile Telephone
NMT (''Nordic Mobile Telephony'') is an automatic cellular phone system specified by Nordic telecommunications administrations ( PTTs) and opened for service on 1 October 1981. NMT is based on analogue technology (first generation or 1G) and two variants exist: NMT-450 and NMT-900. The numbers indicate the frequency bands used. NMT-900 was introduced in 1986 and carries more channels than the older NMT-450 network. The NMT specifications were free and open, allowing many companies to produce NMT hardware and pushing prices down. The success of NMT was important to Nokia (then Mobira) and Ericsson. First Danish implementers were Storno (then owned by General Electric, later taken over by Motorola) and AP (later taken over by Philips). Initial NMT phones were designed to mount in the trunk of a car, with a keyboard/display unit at the driver's seat. "Portable" versions existed, though they were still bulky, and with battery life a big problem. Later models such as Benefon's we ...

Digital Cellular System
A cellular network or mobile network is a communication network where the link to and from end nodes is wireless. The network is distributed over land areas called "cells", each served by at least one fixed-location transceiver (typically three cell sites or base transceiver stations). These base stations provide the cell with the network coverage which can be used for transmission of voice, data, and other types of content. A cell typically uses a different set of frequencies from neighboring cells, to avoid interference and provide guaranteed service quality within each cell. When joined together, these cells provide radio coverage over a wide geographic area. This enables numerous portable transceivers (e.g., mobile phones, tablets and laptops equipped with mobile broadband modems, pagers, etc.) to communicate with each other and with fixed transceivers and telephones anywhere in the network, via base stations, even if some of the transceivers are moving through more than o ...

General overview Mobile number portability is implemented in varying ways across the globe. The International and European standard specifies that a customer wishing to port their number contact the new network (recipient), which then sends the number portability request (NPR) to the current network (donor). This is known as "recipient-led" porting. By contrast, the United Kingdom, UK and India are the only exceptions to implement a "donor-led" system. In the case of a donor-led system, the customer wishing to port their number is ...
