Telegram Corporation
Telegram Corporation was a Canadian media company created under a joint venture between John Bassett's ''Toronto Telegram'' newspaper and businessman John David Eaton (a member of the prominent Eaton family), as one of three co-owners of CFTO-TV in 1960. When the ''Toronto Telegram'' was shut down in 1971, the company was renamed Baton Broadcasting Incorporated (after the Bassett and Eaton families). Baton Broadcasting was renamed once again to Baton Broadcast System :''This is about the defunct television system owned by Baton Broadcasting. John Bassett
John White Hughes Bassett, (August 25, 1915 – April 27, 1998) was a Canadian media proprietor. Born in Ottawa, Ontario, he was the son of John Bassett (1886–1958), publisher of the ''Montreal Gazette'', and Marion Avery (née Wright). Education Bassett attended Ashbury College, Bishop's College School and graduated from Bishop's University with a BA in 1936. Politics After fighting with the Army in World War II, Bassett ran unsuccessfully for the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada, in the 1945 Canadian election in the riding of Sherbrooke, losing to Liberal incumbent, Maurice Gingues. He also ran in the 1962 election in the riding of Spadina losing to Liberal candidate Perry Ryan by less than 2,000 votes. John David Eaton
John David Eaton (4 October 1909 – 4 August 1973) was a Canadian businessman and a member of the prominent Eaton family (Toronto), Eaton family. He was the second son of Sir John Craig Eaton and Flora Eaton, Lady Eaton of Toronto, Ontario. He was married to Signy Stefansson Eaton, Signy Stefansson, and they had four sons. John David's grandfather was Timothy Eaton, founder of the Eaton's department store business. John David's father, Sir John, took on the role of president of the company after the founder died in 1907. Life and career John David grew up in Toronto on a large estate overlooking the city, which was called Ardwold. His mother, Lady Eaton, was a Toronto society matron and hosted many major functions at Ardwold. Sir John died of pneumonia in 1922 at the age of 45. Bell Media Inc. ( French: ) is a Canadian company formed by the amalgamation of several companies. Establishment (2011–13) On December 9, 2011, the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan announced the sale of its majority stake in Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment to BCE and its rival, Rogers Communications, in a deal valued at around $1.32 billion. Additionally, Larry Tanenbaum increased his stake in the company to 25%. The deal closed in August 2012.
