Telecommunications In Bangladesh
The liberalization of Bangladesh's telecommunications sector began with small steps in 1989 with the issuance of a license to a private operator for the provision of ''inter alia'' cellular mobile services to compete with Bangladesh Telegraph and Telephone Board (BTTB), the previous monopoly provider of telecommunications services within Bangladesh. Significant changes in the number of fixed and mobile services deployed in Bangladesh occurred in the late 1990s and the number of services in operation has subsequently grown exponentially in the past five years. The incentives both from the government and public sectors have helped the industry grow and it is now one of the biggest industries in Bangladesh. Bangladesh Telegraph And Telephone Board
BTCL or Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Limited is the largest telecommunications company in Bangladesh. The company was founded as the Bangladesh Telegraph & Telephone Board (BTTB) following Bangladesh's independence in 1971. On July 1, 2008 the BTTB became a public limited company and was renamed as BTCL. The Bangladesh government initially owned all BTCL shares, but stated it would sell the shares to the public the following year. The value of BTCL is estimated to be at ৳15,000 crore (৳150 billion). BTCL has a total of 12,636 officials and staff. BTCL provides land-line telephone services in Bangladesh's urban areas, including domestic long-distance calling and international services as well as internet services. In 2004, the Bangladesh Government issued a number of PSTN licenses to private companies, but they were barred from providing services in the lucrative Dhaka market (which accounts for the majority of the nationwide market). Robi (company)
Robi Axiata Limited, doing business as Robi, is the second largest mobile network operator in Bangladesh currently owned by two major stakeholders being Axiata and Bharti Airtel. In this company, Axiata of Malaysia holds a major controlling stake of 61.82%, Bharti Airtel of India holds 28.18%, and remaining 10% stake is hold by investors in DSE and CSE. Robi first commenced operation in 1997 as Telekom Malaysia International (Bangladesh) with the brand name ‘AKTEL’. In 2010 the company was re-branded to ‘Robi’ and the company changed its name to Robi Axiata Limited. Robi Axiata has spectrum on GSM 900, 1800 and 2100 MHz bands. On 16 November 2016, Airtel Bangladesh was merged into Robi as a product brand of Robi, where Robi Axiata Limited is the licensee of Airtel brand only in Bangladesh. WorldTel
WorldTel Limited was established in January 1995 as part of an International Telecommunication Union initiative to help mobilize development of the telecommunications sector in developing countries. The primary catalyst for its creation was a McKinsey & Co. report recommending creation of a separate company for this purpose. Sam Pitroda, who developed the telecommunications services in India, became its first chairman in May 1995. In 1996, $10 million of financing was announced, along with plans for 50 million telephone lines. WorldTel UK was awarded a 2001 license for services in Bangladesh. In 2004 Swedtel, based in Stockholm, was purchased by WorldTel UK Limited. RanksTel ( bn, র্যাংকসটেল) is a Bangladeshi telecommunications company. It is a private public switched telephone network (PSTN) operator in Bangladesh, and nation's second largest PSTN operator. Ranks Telecom Limited, a member of Rangs Group, launched its fixed line operation under the brand name RANKSTEL on 14 April 2005. RANKSTEL is registered with Registrar of Joint Stock Companies. RANKSTEL holds PSTN and ISP licenses to operate nationwide. RANKSTEL has also been awarded an International Gateway (IGW) license and currently originates and terminates international voice traffic.
