Teddy Maguire
James Edward Maguire (23 July 1917 – 1990) was an English footballer, who spent the majority of his career with Wolverhampton Wanderers. Career Maguire moved into league football Wolverhampton Wanderers from non-league Willington in his native County Durham in 1936. He made his league debut on 14 November 1936 in a 1–2 loss at Stoke City, one of 14 appearances in his first season. He became a first choice player the following season, as the club finished runners-up in the league. The following year brought Maguire close to silverware again but Wolves ultimately finished as runner-up in both the league and FA Cup. He remained on the club's books during the break from competitive football caused by World War II, but never played an official game for them post-war. In May 1947, he signed for Swindon Town, where he remained for 15 months before ending his league career with a spell at Halifax Town. He died in 1990. Meadowfield
Meadowfield is a small village in County Durham, England, situated approximately two miles south-west of Durham on the A690. It is situated within the civil parish of Brandon and Byshottles. The village consists mainly of one road of terraced housing that runs from Langley Moor in the north-east, to Willington and Crook in the south-west. Directly to the north, is the large village of Brandon. This was the site of a pit and also a brick works. The village has a small industrial estate, which was the scene of a relatively large fire in a nappy factory in 1991. One of the buildings of note in Meadowfield is the Anglican church of St John the Evangelist, one of the larger parish churches in County Durham. There is also a Royal British Legion social club, which occupies a wooden cabin, which was brought over from Canada. 1939 FA Cup Final
The 1939 FA Cup Final was contested by Portsmouth and Wolverhampton Wanderers at Wembley. Portsmouth won 4–1, with goals from Bert Barlow, John Anderson and two by Cliff Parker. Dicky Dorsett scored Wolves' effort. As a result of the suspension of the FA Cup for the duration of the Second World War, the next FA Cup final was not until seven years later in 1946, thereby enabling Portsmouth fans to claim that their team has held the Cup for the longest time. Wolves had entered the game as clear favourites, having scored 19 goals in their five FA Cup games and lying second in the league table. By contrast, Portsmouth were struggling in the relegation zone. Captain Jimmy Guthrie was presented with the cup by King George VI. Spennymoor United A
Spennymoor is a town and civil parish in County Durham, England. It is south of the River Wear and is south of Durham. The civil parish includes the villages of Kirk Merrington, Middlestone Moor, Byers Green and Tudhoe. History Origins The land on which Spennymoor now stands was once a vast expanse of moorland covered with thorn and whin bushes (Spenny Moor). In 1336 its place-name was recorded as ''Spendingmor''. The name is probably derived from the Old English or Old Norse ''spenning'' and ''mōr'', meaning a moor with a fence or enclosure. Another theory of the place-name's origin is from the Latin ''spina'', meaning thorn (possibly from the Roman influence at Binchester) combined with the Old English or Old Norse ''mōr''. The Football Association Challenge Cup, more commonly known as the FA Cup, is an annual knockout football competition in men's domestic English football. First played during the 1871–72 season, it is the oldest national football competition in the world. It is organised by and named after The Football Association (The FA). Since 2015, it has been known as The Emirates FA Cup after its headline sponsor. A concurrent women's tournament is also held, the Women's FA Cup.
