Ted Benoît
Thierry "Ted" Benoit (25 July 1947 – 30 September 2016) was a French comic artist, graphic novelist and prominent figure in the stylish Franco-Belgian comics, Franco-Belgian ligne claire comics scene in the 1980s. His influences included Edgar P. Jacobs, Jean Giraud, Moebius, Robert Crumb and to a lesser extend Jacques Tardi. Among his works from the 1980s are ''Bingo Bongo et son Combo Congolais'', a series about aspiring novelist Bingo B. Bongo and his travails; and ''Ray Banana'', a film noir pastiche. Some of these were published in English in ''Heavy Metal (magazine), Heavy Metal''. Benoit illustrated two books in the ''Blake and Mortimer'' series, both written by Jean Van Hamme: ''The Francis Blake Affair'', 1996; and ''The Strange Encounter'', 2001. Benoit died on 30 September 2016 at the age of 69. Niort
Niort (; Poitevin: ''Niàu''; oc, Niòrt; la, Novioritum) is a commune in the Deux-Sèvres department, western France. It is the prefecture of Deux-Sèvres. The population of Niort is 58,707 (2017) and more than 177,000 people live in the urban area. Geography The town is located on the river Sèvre Niortaise and is a centre of angelica cultivation in France. Near Niort at Maisonnay there is one of the tallest radio masts in France (height: 330 metres). Transport Niort has a railway station on the TGV route between Paris and La Rochelle, Gare de Niort. Direct TGV to Paris Montparnasse station takes 2 hours and 15 minutes. The Francis Blake Affair
''The Francis Blake Affair'' was the thirteenth Blake and Mortimer book and the first one not to be written by Edgar P. Jacobs. It was published in 1996. Plot The United Kingdom is shaken by the revelation of the existence of an espionage network in the country. At a meeting at Scotland Yard between intelligence (MI5 and MI6), Scotland Yard and the Home Office, Captain Francis Blake, Director of MI5, explains that whenever its services take a track, spies manage to disappear without a trace. Only a message carrier by name of Jennings was arrested. He then speculates there is a mole within the Intelligence Service. The same night, at the Centaur Club, Blake explains to Professor Philip Mortimer the difficulty of dismantling such a network where are agents unknown even among themselves. Raymond Chandler
Raymond Thornton Chandler (July 23, 1888 – March 26, 1959) was an American-British novelist and screenwriter. In 1932, at the age of forty-four, Chandler became a detective fiction writer after losing his job as an oil company executive during the Great Depression. His first short story, " Blackmailers Don't Shoot", was published in 1933 in '' Black Mask,'' a popular pulp magazine. His first novel, ''The Big Sleep'', was published in 1939. In addition to his short stories, Chandler published seven novels during his lifetime (an eighth, in progress at the time of his death, was completed by Robert B. Parker). All but '' Playback'' have been made into motion pictures, some more than once. In the year before his death, he was elected president of the Mystery Writers of America. Casterman is a publisher of Franco-Belgian comics, specializing in comic books and children's literature. The company is based in Brussels, Belgium. History The company was founded in 1780 by Donat-Joseph Casterman, an editor and bookseller originally from Tournai.Bocquet, José-Louis, and Fromental, Jean-Luc. The Strange Encounter
''The Strange Encounter'' (''L'Étrange Rendez-Vous'' in the original French) is the fifteenth book in the Blake and Mortimer series created by Edgar P. Jacobs. Published in 2001, it was written by Jean Van Hamme and drawn by Ted Benoit who had already contributed to the series with ''The Francis Blake Affair'' in 1996. Whereas that book dealt with espionage, this story combines elements of detective and science fiction of the sort present in Jacobs' original stories. Plot Late one night in 1954, a Colorado farmer sees three strange coloured beams of light appearing from the sky. When he goes to investigate the lights have disappeared and left behind the body of a man dressed in the uniform of a British Redcoat. Jean Van Hamme
Jean, knight Van Hamme (born 16 January 1939) is a Belgian novelist and comic book writer. He has written scripts for a number of Belgian/French comic series, including ''Histoire sans héros'', ''Thorgal'', ''XIII'' and ''Largo Winch''. Biography Early years After studying business administration at the Solvay Brussels School of Economics and Management, he worked as a journalist and in the marketing department of Philips. In the meantime, he started writing, and one of his first scripts was adapted by Paul Cuvelier in 1968. This erotic comic named Epoxy was published by the controversial publisher Éric Losfeld, who prior to that also had published similarly themed comics like Jean-Claude Forest's Barbarella and Robert Gigi's Scarlett Dream.
