Ted Beard
Cramer Theodore Beard (January 7, 1921 – December 30, 2011) was an American professional baseball player who played for the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Chicago White Sox for parts of seven seasons spanning 1948–1958. Born in Woodsboro, Maryland, the outfielder threw and batted left-handed, stood tall and weighed . Beard was signed by the Pittsburgh Pirates as an amateur free agent in 1942 and spent the next six years playing in the minor leagues. Upon reaching the Majors, he played in the outfield for the Pirates for five seasons until his contract was purchased by the San Francisco Seals on April 8, 1954, for $10,000. His contract was again sold on March 1, 1956, to the Cleveland Indians. Prior to the 1957 season, Beard was assigned to the Indianapolis Indians before being called up to the big leagues by the White Sox later that season. Outfielder
An outfielder is a person playing in one of the three defensive positions in baseball or softball, farthest from the batter. These defenders are the left fielder, the center fielder, and the right fielder. As an outfielder, their duty is to catch fly balls and ground balls then to return them to the infield for the out or before the runner advances, if there are any runners on the bases. As an outfielder, they normally play behind the six players located in the field. By convention, each of the nine defensive positions in baseball is numbered. The outfield positions are 7 (left field), 8 (center field) and 9 (right field). In baseball, a home run (abbreviated HR) is scored when the ball is hit in such a way that the batter is able to circle the bases and reach home plate safely in one play without any errors being committed by the defensive team.
