Te Aroha Keenan
Te Aroha Keenan is a New Zealand former netball coach and member of the Silver Ferns in the 1980s. She later coached the Cook Islands national team at the 1999 Netball World Championships, as well as a multinational Team Pasifika in a test series against New Zealand, the New Zealand U21 team which won the 2005 World Youth Netball Championships, and as of 2008 was the New Zealand A coach. Keenan was signed as the assistant coach for the Northern Mystics in the inaugural season of the ANZ Championship. After a lacklustre first season for the Mystics, she replaced Yvonne Willering as head coach for the 2009 season. During her coaching role, she took leave as Deputy Principal at Mt Albert Grammar School in Auckland. After two years as head coach for the Mystics, Keenan was not wanted in 2010, with rumors that she was asked to leave due to an over recruitment of outside players and a lack of ability to develop players within the region. New Zealand National Netball Team
The New Zealand national netball team, commonly known as the Silver Ferns, represent New Zealand in international netball. The team take their nickname from the Silver Tree Fern (''Cyathea dealbata''), which is an emblem for many New Zealand sports teams. The Silver Ferns were formed in 1938 as a representative New Zealand team to tour Australia. To date, they have been one of the most dominant national netball teams in the world, along with Australia, and have a winning record against most other netball nations. The Silver Ferns are current world champions and ranked second in the INF World Rankings, behind Australia. The Silver Ferns compete annually for the Constellation Cup; a home-and-away test series with Australia, and also play test matches with other major netball countries, including England and Jamaica, on a regular basis. Netball is a ball sport played on a court by two teams of seven players. It is among a rare number of sports which have been created exclusively for female competitors. The sport is played on indoor and outdoor netball courts and is specifically played in schools. Netball is most popularly played in Commonwealth nations. A common misunderstanding of the sport's origins has resulted in the mistaken belief that netball was created to prevent women from playing basketball. However, the sport is the result of Clara Baer's misinterpretation of its rules. Baer had asked James Naismith, the Canadian inventor of basketball, to send her a copy of the rules, and Baer's errors resulted in what marked the beginning of the development of a separate sport.
