Tayseer Abu Sneineh
Tayseer Abu Sneineh (alt. Tisir Abu Sneina) is a Palestinian Arab politician, a former member of the Fatah party, and Mayor of Hebron, in the West Bank. He was convicted by Israel for taking part in the 1980 Hebron terrorist attack, who caused death to 6 unarmed civilians. He was elected Mayor of Hebron on 14 May 2017. Abu Sneina has been lecturing voluntarily to Palestinian youth on the 1980 terrorist act. Background Sneinah is a former math teacher and a graduate of the University of Jordan, in Amman. Political career Abu Sneineh was appointed in 1993 to the waqf that administers the Ibrahimi Mosque in Cave of the Patriarchs. Jewish groups protested his appointment. 2021–22 Palestinian Local Elections
On 11 December 2021, local elections were held in Palestine. 154 towns and villages in the West Bank voted in municipal polls in the first phase, but there were no elections in the Gaza Strip. On 26 March 2022, municipal elections were held in 73 localities of West Bank. Background On 6 September, the Palestinian Authority decided to hold the elections for the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. 1980 Hebron Attack
On May 2, 1980, six Jews - three Israelis, two American Israelis, and one Canadian - were killed, and another 20 Jews were injured at 7:30 pm on a Friday night as they returned home from Sabbath prayer services at the Cave of the Patriarchs in Hebron. Five of the six killed were yeshiva students aged 20–21. They were attacked with gunfire and grenades from the rooftops around a small alley. It was the most deadly attack on the Israeli occupied West Bank since the Six-Day War. 2017 Palestinian Local Elections
The Palestinian cabinet, headed by Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah, announced on 23 June 2016 a decision to hold municipal elections on 8 October 2016. The elections were suspended by the Palestinian Court in early September and in January 2017 they were set to 13 May 2017. They were expected to be the first elections in all of the Palestinian territories since Hamas' takeover of the Gaza Strip in 2007, as Hamas agreed to participate in the local elections and allow them to be held in the Gaza Strip but disagreements between Hamas and Fatah led to Hamas boycotting stating it will participate only after "ending disagreements, achieving reconciliation, and uniting Palestinian institutions, including at the political, judicial, and security levels".
