Harry Piel
Heinrich Piel (12 July 1892 – 27 March 1963), known professionally as Harry Piel, was a prolific German actor, film director, screenwriter, and film producer who was involved in over 150 films. Piel became a director in 1912, turning out such box-office successes as ''Mann Gegen Mann'' (1928), ''Achtung! - Auto-Diebe!'' (1930) and ''Artisten'' (1935). His last directorial effort was 1953's ''Gesprengte Gitter (Elephant Fury'', a.k.a. ''Panic''), which he also produced, wrote, and starred. Early life After attending elementary school in Benrath and High School in Derendorf, Piel became a cadet in 1909 on a sailing ship, the ''Grand Duchess Elizabeth''. In 1911, however, he finished his cadet hood and moved to Berlin in 1912 where he created the "Art Film Publishing House Company" and made, as a director, screenwriter and producer, his first feature ''Black Blood'' (1912) with Curt Goetz in the lead role. Fritz Maurischat (April 27, 1893 in Berlin – December 11, 1986) was a German production designer. He made his film debut in 1924. Over the next 38 years, he worked on over 70 films, all of them in his native Germany. He earned an Oscar nomination in 1953 for his work on the film ''Martin Luther'', an American film about Martin Luther made in Germany. He is also noted as the Art Director for the 1943 Nazi propaganda film ''Titanic''. Aruth Wartan (or ''Haruth Vartan'', hy, Հարութ Վարդան, 23 June 1880 – 14 April 1945) was a German film actor of Armenian origin who appeared in around ninety films during his career, generally in supporting roles. Life and career Born Arutjun Wartanian in Nakhichevan in the Russian Empire, he was of Armenian heritage. He graduated from high school in 1898 in Tbilisi, Georgia, and then briefly studied medicine in Kharkov (now in Ukraine). Around the turn of the century he briefly lived in Japan before relocating to St. Petersburg. During the Revolution of 1905 he moved to Saxony in Germany and studied at the Freiberg University of Mining and Technology.
