Tavistock Association Football Club is a football club based in Tavistock, Devon, England. They play in the . History The club was formed on 8 September 1888, when sportsman and businessman Herbert Spencer summoned "interested persons to assemble at the Guildhall" where a committee would be elected under the chairmanship of his brother, Wilfred, with Herbert as his deputy and another brother, Kingsley, on the committee. They played their first games at the old Tavistock Grammar School playing fields, playing in the Devon League. At the 2011 census the three electoral wards (North, South and South West) had a population of 13,028. It traces its recorded history back to at least 961 when Tavistock Abbey, whose ruins lie in the centre of the town, was founded. Its most famous son is Sir Francis Drake. History Middle Ages The area around Tavistock (formerly Tavistoke), where the River Tavy runs wide and shallow allowing it to be easily crossed, and near the secure high ground of Dartmoor, was inhabited long before historical records. The surrounding area is littered with archaeological remains from the Bronze and Iron Ages and it is believed a hamlet existed on the site of the present town long before the town's official history began, with the founding of the Abbey. Ben Ibrahim Camara (born 20 August 1984 in Bonn) is an English former professional footballer who played in the Football League for Torquay United. Biography Camara was born in the West German city of Bonn and grew up in Plymouth. He joined Torquay United's Centre of Excellence whilst at school in Tavistock and continued to play for Tavistock Town. He signed as a trainee on 1 July 2001 and made his league debut on 15 March 2003, coming on a substitute in a 1–1 draw at home to Scunthorpe United. He made a further substitute appearance on 3 May 2003, in a 1–1 away to Lincoln City and was awarded young player of the year and a professional contract that summer (along with fellow trainees Kain Bond, Lucas Burgess, Graham Killoughery and Steven Orchard). Daniel Michael C Sullivan (born 1 September 1994) is an English footballer who plays for Truro City as a forward. After rising through Torquay United's youth system, Sullivan made his senior debut in August 2013. Mike Trebilcock
Michael Trebilcock (born 29 November 1944) is an English retired professional footballer. He played primarily as a winger and is most famous for scoring twice in the 1966 FA Cup Final for Everton, becoming the first black player to score in an FA Cup Final. Trebilcock is described as a "black mixed heritage player" by sociologist Mark Christian, who notes that the label of first black Everton player is often wrongly given to Cliff Marshall, "due to rebilcock'sambiguous black mixed heritage". Bill Shortt (13 October 1920 – 20 September 2004) was a Welsh professional footballer who played as a goalkeeper. He was born in Wrexham and was capped 12 times by Wales. Playing career Shortt joined Chester on amateur terms in 1938 after being spotted playing for local side Hoole Alex., signing a professional contract the following May after a loan spell with Wellington. Although Shortt officially never played a Football League match for Chester, he was a regular for the first-team throughout the war years. He made his debut in the club's first wartime league match against Tranmere Rovers in October 1939 and played his final match against Rochdale in January 1946, shortly before moving to Division Two side Plymouth Argyle for £1,000.
