Tartuffe (1965 Film)
"Tartuffe" is a 1965 Australian television film directed by Henri Safran and starring Tony Bonner and Ron Haddrick. It was an episode of ''Wednesday Theatre'' and filmed in Sydney at ABC's Gore Hill Studios. It aired on 13 October 1965 in Sydney and Melbourne, and on 20 October 1965 in Brisbane. Australian TV drama was relatively rare at the time. Plot Tartuffe convinces the rich merchant Organ he is a saint. Organ agrees for Tartuffe to marry his daughter although Tartuffe is actually interested in seducing Organ's wife. Doreen Warburton
Doreen Warburton (22 March 1930 – 19 July 2017) was an Australian actress, director, and theatre co-founder. Biography Evelyn Doreen Warburton was born in London on 22 March 1930. At 18 she began her theatre career with the Theatre Workshop, a company where all performers received equal pay and which toured, not just England but also to Scandinavia and Germany. In 1953 she migrated to Australia to join her family, who had arrived in 1949 and seeking radio work. She made her Australian stage debut in ''The Shop at Sly Corner'' at the opening of the Apollo Theatre in Manly and then toured New South Wales in '' Love From a Stranger''. Warburton became a full-time actress in 1959 when she joined the Young Elizabethans and toured Australia for three years bringing Shakespeare's plays to school children. Doris Goddard
Doris Goddard (1 March 1930 – 29 July 2019) was an Australian cabaret singer and film actress; in her later life, she was also the publican of several hotels in Sydney, including the Hotel Hollywood (building), Hotel Hollywood. Life and career Goddard was an entertainer who moved to England to become a star but was told she was too tall (at 5'8") to play roles alongside male actors. Goddard called this "an irreversible physical disability" and was told to forget about being on stage and film; she moved to cabaret instead. However, the film Geordie (film), ''Geordie'' (1955) required a tall actress to play alongside Bill Travers, who was 6'4"; Goddard was sent a telegram requesting her services and arrived on set the next day. Ron Haddrick
Ronald Norman Haddrick (9 April 1929 – 11 February 2020) was an Australian actor, cricketer, narrator and presenter. In 2012, he received the Actors Equity Lifetime Achievement Award for his long and distinguished career in media, spanning some seventy years both locally and also in Britain. He appeared in many Shakespeare roles and often performed with theatre actress Ruth Cracknell. At the time Australian playwright David Williamson said, "Ron Haddrick was chosen for two reasons. Henri Safran
Henri Safran (born 7 October 1932) is a Paris-born director who worked extensively in Australia. He worked in French television, then in Britain, before moving to Australia in 1960 to work with the ABC. He became an Australian citizen in 1963 but returned to England in 1966 to work on British television. Tony Bonner
Anthony Frederick Bonner (born 23 November 1943) is an Australian television, film and stage actor and singer. Bonner became famous in the 1960s children's television series '' Skippy the Bush Kangaroo'', later moving on to lead roles in the dramas ''Cop Shop'' and ''Skyways''. Early life Bonner was born in Manly, a northern beach suburb of Sydney. His grandfather, James Bonner, was a former Mayor of Manly and founding President of the Manly Life Saving Club. His father, Frederick Bonner, was a musical comedy actor at Her Majesty's Theatre, Sydney. After leaving school he started work for a company supplying mannequins and other equipment for window dressing.
