William L. McKnight (November 11, 1887 – March 4, 1978) was an American businessman and philanthropist who served his entire career in the 3M corporation, rising to chairman of the board from 1949 to 1966. He founded the McKnight Foundation in 1953. Biography William L. McKnight was the third child born to homesteaders Joseph and Cordelia McKnight, who left the East in 1880 to claim a homestead in South Dakota. William was born in the family's sod house in White, South Dakota. McKnight attended Duluth Business University, and after attending school for only 4 months of the 6-month program, began working for 3M Corporation as an Assistant Bookkeeper in May 1907, at a salary of $11.55 per week. The Eclipse Award is an American Thoroughbred horse racing award named after the 18th-century British racehorse and sire, Eclipse. An Eclipse Award Trophy is presented to the winner in each division that is made by a few small selected American foundries with expertise in studio bronze casting. Intentionally (April 2, 1956 – January 15, 1970) was an American Eclipse Award, Champion Thoroughbred Horse racing, racehorse and an important foundation sire for the Florida horse breeding industry. Background Foaled at Wolf Run Farm in Lexington, Kentucky, he was bred and raced by Baltimore, Maryland clothing manufacturer Harry Z. Isaacs, Harry Isaacs' Brookfield Farm. Ta Wee (1966–1980) was an American Thoroughbred Hall of Fame race horse. Background Ta Wee was bred at the Tartan Stable of William L. McKnight (chairman of the board of Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Co.). (The W. L. McKnight Handicap is raced in his honor at Calder Race Course.) Foaled on March 26, 1966, she was sired by Intentionally, the American Champion Sprint Horse of 1959. Man o' War appears on both sides of Ta Wee's pedigree, but Ta Wee's dam was the great broodmare Aspidistra by Better Self by Bimelech by Black Toney. Aspidistra also goes back to the influential Ben Brush. A birthday gift in 1957 to McKnight by his employees, Aspidistra cost a reputed $6,500 and was entered in claiming races.
