Taras Kozyra
Taras Kozyra (born September 26, 1941) is a former politician in Ontario, Canada. He was a Liberal member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1987 to 1990. Background Kozrya moved to Canada at a young age, and was educated at the University of Western Ontario and Lakehead University. He worked in Thunder Bay as a teacher. Politics He served as a councillor in the Thunder Bay City Council from 1972 to 1978 and from 1982 to 1987. He was elected to the Ontario legislature in the 1987 provincial election, defeating NDP candidate Chris Southcott by just under 2,000 votes in the riding of Port Arthur. He served as a backbench supporter of David Peterson's government for the next three years, and was parliamentary assistant to the Minister of Northern Development on two occasions. David Peterson
David Robert Peterson (born December 28, 1943) is a Canadian lawyer and former politician who served as the 20th premier of Ontario from 1985 to 1990. He was the first Liberal officeholder in 42 years, ending the so-called Tory dynasty. Background Peterson was born in Toronto, Ontario, to Clarence Marwin Peterson (1913–2009) and Laura Marie Scott (1913–2015), and has two siblings, former MPP Tim Peterson and former MP Jim Peterson. 1987 Ontario General Election
The 1987 Ontario general election was held on September 10, 1987, to elect members of the 34th Legislative Assembly of Ontario. The governing Ontario Liberal Party, led by Premier David Peterson, was returned to power with their first majority government in half a century, and the second-largest majority government in the province's history. Peterson had successfully managed to govern with a minority in the Legislature by obtaining the co-operation of the Ontario New Democratic Party, led by Bob Rae, in a confidence and supply agreement. It was through the NDP's support that Peterson was able to form a government, even though the Progressive Conservative Party had won a slightly larger number of seats in the previous election.
