Tarapacá Migrant Crisis
In 2021, Tarapacá Region in northern Chile saw an unprecedented movement of foreign migrants into its territory. The Altiplano town of Colchane along the border with Bolivia has been the irregular point of entry of an estimate of 18,000 Venezuelan migrants and about 3,000 Bolivian migrants up to September. The border crossed by most migrants is arid, cold and lies at 3,600 meters above sea level. This route is chosen since the more direct, and less harsh route across the Chile–Peru border is better guarded. Migrants are aided in the crossing by human smugglers. By February 2021 the cost for a family to be crossed into Chile was between 200 and US$500. Migrants have been accused by the alcalde of Colchane and local residents of acting violently by forcing themselves into inhabited houses of Colchane, engaging in theft and occupying public spaces. Colchane
Colchane is a Chilean village and commune in Tamarugal Province, Tarapacá Region. The commune is located in the Andean altiplano, bordering Bolivia. It also includes the localities of Isluga, Enquelga, Cariquima and Chijo. Demographics According to the 2002 census of the National Statistics Institute, Colchane had 1,649 inhabitants (910 men and 739 women), and it is entirely rural. The population grew by 5.7% (94 persons) between the 1992 and 2002 censuses. It has the country's highest rate of people living under the poverty line at 34.56% (Encuesta Casen, 2006). Administration As a commune, Colchane is a third-level administrative division of Chile administered by a municipal council, headed by an alcalde who is directly elected every four years. Chilenization Of Tacna, Arica And Tarapacá
The Chilenization of Tacna, Arica and Tarapacá was a process of forced transculturation or acculturation in the areas (Tacna, Arica and Tarapacá) which were invaded and incorporated by Chile since the War of the Pacific (1879–1883). The aim of the Chilenization was to create a dominance of Chilean traditions and culture in that region, in preference to those of the Peruvian population. The British desire to reunite all saltpeter mines under one political administration was also a major factor that influenced the outcome of the war. Radio Bío-Bío is a Chilean radio station with broad coverage in Chile. It covers news, sports, music, economics, and international relations. The station was founded in 1966 in Concepción. In the 1990s it began to expand across the country. The first additional stations were in southern Chile in Temuco, Osorno and Puerto Montt, and Santiago in 1997. One of the main stations is operated in Lonquimay in the Cordillera of the Andes in the Araucanía Region.
