Rupganj ( bn, রূপগঞ্জ) is an upazila of Narayanganj District in the Division of Dhaka, Bangladesh. Geography Rupganj is located at . It has 64902 households and total area 247.97 km2. Demographics As of the 1991 Bangladesh census, Rupganj has a population of 375,935. Males constitute 53% of the population, and females 47%. This Upazila's eighteen-up population is 187,590. Rupganj has an average literacy rate of 37.9% (7+ years), and the national average of 32.4% literate. Administration Rupganj Upazila is divided into Kanchan Municipality, Tarabo Municipality and seven union parishads: Bholaba, Bulta, Daudpur, Golakandail, Kayetpara, Murapara, and Rupganj. The union parishads are subdivided into 144 mauzas and 285 villages. Kanchan Municipality and Tarabo Municipality are each subdivided into 9 wards and 9 mahallas. Narayanganj District
Narayanganj District ( bn, নারায়ণগঞ্জ, Narayoṇgonj) is a district in central Bangladesh which is a part of the Dhaka Division. It is home to the ancient city of Sonargaon and is one of the oldest industrial districts in the country. The district lies on the banks of the Shitalakshya River and the Meghna River. It is an industrial hub and plays an important part in the country's jute trade, plant processing and sector. It is nicknamed the "Dundee of Bangladesh" due to the presence of many jute mills. History Narayanganj had the same history as much of the rest of the Dhaka area. Formerly ruled by the Palas and Senas, the region became part of the Muslim Bengal Sultanate in the 14th century. Sonargaon, capital of Bengal during the reign of Isa Khan, is in the district. Later the region was taken over by the Mughals as the Bengal Subah.
