Tanveer Ahmed (footballer)
Tanveer Ahmed ( ur, تنویر احمد; born 15 April 1976) is a football manager and former player who is the current head coach of WAPDA in the Pakistan Premier League. Club career Ahmed started his career at CMF Sialkot, where his defensive ability was brought to attention and soon was called up to the national team. He was transferred to WAPDA in the 2002 season, where he was given the captaincy and won the National Championship in 2003. In the new Pakistan Premier League in 2004, WAPDA were one of the favourites to win the title, but it took until the final day of the season before they were crowned champions. They lost the PPL the following year. Managerial career After retiring from international football after the 2010 World Cup qualifiers in 2007, Ahmed became WAPDA Assistant Manager as well as retaining his squad player status, and helped them with the 2007–08 Pakistan Premier League. 2007 AFC Asian Cup Qualification
The 2007 AFC Asian Cup qualification was held in late 2005 and the final qualification round was held from February to November 2006 with 25 nations participating. For the first time, the defending champions (Japan), did not earn an automatic berth in the finals and had to compete in the qualification tournament. Twelve teams from top two of each groups joined with four host nations (Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam) qualify for the final tournament. The 2004–05 Pakistan Premier League season was the inaugural season of Pakistan Premier League, top tier of Pakistani football. The season started on 28 May 2004 and concluded on 13 October 2004. Formation The league was created as a replacement for group stage based National championship. The new PFF president, Makhdoom Syed Faisal Saleh Hayat, decided that it was time for Pakistan to have a football league. He felt that past presidents had neglected domestic football, and as a result, the national team suffered. The Pakistan football champions are the winners of the highest league in Pakistani football, which is currently the Pakistan Premier League. Pakistan’s first football tournament began on May 28, 1948 as the National Football Championship, a knock-out competition, which remained as the top football competition in the country until 2004 with the introduction of the Pakistan Premier League.
