Tanichthys Albiventris
''Tanichthys'' is a genus of freshwater fish in the carp family (Cyprinidae) of order Cypriniformes. They are native to rivers and streams in China and Vietnam. Until recently, the type species, ''T. albonubes,'' was the only one known. In 2001, however, Freyhof and Herder described a new and very similar species, ''T. micagemmae,'' from the Ben Hai River in Vietnam and V. H. Nguyen & S. V. Ngô described a third species from Vietnam. The name ''Tanichthys'' comes from the name of the Chinese Boy Scout leader, Tan, who discovered the first specimen. White Cloud Mountain Minnow
The White Cloud Mountain minnow (''Tanichthys albonubes'') is a hardy species of freshwater fish and coldwater fish often kept in an aquarium. The species is a member of the carp family (family Cyprinidae) of the order Cypriniformes, native to China. The White Cloud Mountain minnow is practically extinct in its native habitat, due to pollution and tourism. It was believed to be extinct for over 20 years in 1980, but an apparently native population of this fish was discovered on Hainan Island, well away from the White Cloud Mountain. They are bred in farms and are easily available through the aquarium trade. However, inbreeding in farms has led to genetically weak stock that is vulnerable to disease and prone to physical deformities. The species was discovered at White Cloud Mountain (白雲山; Pinyin Bái Yún Shān) in the city of Guǎngzhōu at the province of Guǎngdōng around the 1930s by a Boy Scout leader called Tan, hence the generic name ''Tanichthys'' ("Tan's fis ...

Cyprinidae Genera
Cyprinidae is a family of freshwater fish commonly called the carp or minnow family. It includes the carps, the true minnows, and relatives like the barbs and barbels. Cyprinidae is the largest and most diverse fish family and the largest vertebrate animal family in general with about 3,000 species, of which only 1,270 remain extant, divided into about 370 genera. Cyprinids range from about 12 mm in size to the giant barb (''Catlocarpio siamensis''). By genus and species count, the family makes up more than two-thirds of the ostariophysian order Cypriniformes. The family name is derived from the Greek word ( 'carp'). Biology and ecology Cyprinids are stomachless fish with toothless jaws. Even so, food can be effectively chewed by the gill rakers of the specialized last gill bow. These pharyngeal teeth allow the fish to make chewing motions against a chewing plate formed by a bony process of the skull. The pharyngeal teeth are unique to each species and are used by scient ...

Tanichthys Micagemmae
''Tanichthys micagemmae'' is a species of freshwater ray-finned fish. It is a member of the carp family (family Cyprinidae) of order Cypriniformes. It was only discovered in 2001, in a tributary of the Bến Hải River in Quảng Bình Province, Vietnam. Its range includes what was the demilitarized zone between North and South Vietnam and was subject to intense bombing during the Vietnam War. It is similar in appearance to the White Cloud Mountain minnow (''T. albonubes''), the most familiar member of its genus, which is a commonly sold freshwater aquarium fish. ''T. micagemmae'' can be distinguished from its more familiar relative primarily by the lighter coloration of its lower body and by the centered position of its lateral stripes, compared with a position well above the middle in ''T. albonubes.'' Some older males develop spectacular elongated dorsal and anal fins. The species is sold in England under the common name ''Vietnamese cardinal minnow''. It is known in Finni ...
