Tan Keong Choon
Tan Keong Choon (; 2 November 1916 – 27 October 2015) was a Chinese industrialist, community leader and philanthropist in Singapore. He is noted for his contributions to Singapore's development and support to the local Chinese community. Early life and education Tan pursued Historical Studies in Xiamen University in 1935, and moved with his mother to Singapore in 1937 due to Japanese invasion of China. After which, he pursued education in Singapore, Kunming, Hong Kong, and Jinan University in Shanghai up till the full outbreak of war in the Asia Pacific region. Business career Tan entered business industry in 1940, at the age of 22. Tan was Managing Director of National Iron and Steel Mills Limited, he pioneered a wage scheme where workers were paid a basic wage, and received extra wages for extra work done. Chen () () is a common Chinese-language surname and one of the most common surnames in Asia. It is the most common surname in Taiwan (2010) and Singapore (2000). The Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCCI; ) is a business chamber in Singapore. The chamber was originally created to protect and promote the commercial interest of the Chinese community in Singapore but it also played a role in the social, cultural and educational spheres to protect Chinese customs and values. Nanyang University
Nanyang University (, also known as Nantah (), was a university in Singapore between 1956 and 1980. During its existence, it was Singapore's only private university in the Chinese language. In 1980, Nanyang University was merged with the University of Singapore to form the National University of Singapore (NUS). It was only until 2005 that another private school in Singapore, SIM University, was established. The Hwa Chong Junior College () was a junior college in Singapore offering pre-university education. The school merged with The Chinese High School on 1 January 2005 to form the integrated Hwa Chong Institution. History Founding Hwa Chong Junior College is the second junior college, and the first government-aided junior college to be established in Singapore, after National Junior College. The Chinese High School () was an independent school in Singapore offering secondary education. The school merged with Hwa Chong Junior College on 1 January 2005 to form the integrated Hwa Chong Institution. Founded on 21 March 1919, The Chinese High School was the first high school in Southeast Asia to cater to different dialect groups among overseas Chinese in the region. After Singapore gained independence in 1965, the school came under the purview of the Ministry of Education (Singapore), Ministry of Education and was accorded the Special Assistance Plan (SAP) status in 1979.
