Tammar Luxoro
Tammar Luxoro (February 11, 1825 – November 25, 1899) was an Italian painter, mainly painting landscapes on site. Biography He was born in Genoa. He enrolled in the Accademia Ligustica of Fine Arts in 1842, and studied under the vedutista Domenico Pasquale Cambiaso. Among his influences were that of the Swiss Alexandre Calame, the Bellunese Ippolito Caffi, and later (1854–1857) in Luxoro's career, Antonio Fontanesi. Among Luxoro's colleagues in landscape painting were Ernesto Rayper, Alfredo d'Andrade, and the Spaniards Serafino D'Avendano and Alberto Issel. Together they began to frequent the studio of Carlo Pittara at Rivara Canavese, where a group of painters met and loosely constituted the so-called ''School of Rivara'', consisting of mainly Ligurian and Piedmontese landscaper painters. The tammar wallaby (''Notamacropus eugenii''), also known as the dama wallaby or darma wallaby, is a small macropod native to South and Western Australia. Though its geographical range has been severely reduced since European colonisation, the tammar wallaby remains common within its reduced range and is listed as "Least Concern" by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). It has been introduced to New Zealand and reintroduced to some areas of Australia where it had been previously extirpated. Skull variations differentiate between tammar wallabies from Western Australia, Kangaroo Island, and mainland South Australia, making them distinct population groups. Aurelio Craffonara
Aurelio Craffonara (September 9, 1875 – February 5, 1945) was an Italian painter and illustrator. Biography Born in Gallarate, he was the nephew of the painter Giuseppe Craffonara of Trento. He moved to Genoa as a boy of 10 years, and trained at the Accademia Ligustica of Fine Arts under Tammar Luxoro. He completed illustrations for posters and publications, including for a satirical periodical under the pseudonym ''Lelo''. The Tammar Luxoro Atlas, or Atlante Luxoro, is an anonymous collection of Italian portolan charts from the early 15th century, currently held at the Biblioteca Civica Berio in Genoa, Italy. The author is unknown, although believed to have been made by Francesco de Cesanis of Venice. Background The Luxoro Atlas is named after Tammar Luxoro, a 19th-century Genoese artist and collector, who once owned it. It was acquired by the city of Genoa in 1899, and is currently held at the Biblioteca Civica Berio in Genoa, Italy. The Luxoro Atlas was once believed to originate from the early 14th century, and sometimes said to have been authored by the Genoese cartographer Pietro Vesconte. However, according to more recent scholars, the Luxoro Atlas was probably made by the Venetian cartographer Francesco de Cesanis, probably a little time before 1421. Angelo De Gubernatis
Count Angelo De Gubernatis (1840–26 February 1913), Italian man of letters, was born in Turin and educated there and at Berlin, where he studied philology. He was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature fourteen times. Life In 1862 he was appointed professor of Sanskrit at Florence, but having married a cousin of the Socialist Bakunin and become interested in his views he resigned his appointment and spent some years in travel. Alfredo Luxoro (1859–1918) was an Italian painter, mainly of Marine landscapes, genre, and orientalist themes. Biography Born in Genoa, he was the son of Tammar, a professor of landscape painting at the Academy of Fine Arts (Accademia Ligustica) of Genoa. He was influenced by the painters of the School of Rivara. He displayed one of his first works, ''Al mare'', at the Florentine Mostra of 1877, the next year at the Genoese Promotrice, ''Fra gli scogli di Quinto''. Carlo Pittara
Carlo Pittara (6 June 1835 – 25 October 1891) was an Italian painter who specialized in animals, pastoral landscapes, rivers and peasants at work. He was also the leader of what came to be known as the . Biography He was born in Turin. He began his studies at the Accademia Albertina, where he worked with the landscape painter Giuseppe Camino. In 1856, he moved to Geneva and studied with Charles Humbert (1813–1881), who specialized in animal paintings. From 1858 to 1860, he lived in Paris, where he became familiar with the works of Camille Corot and Charles Jacque. He also came under the influence of the Barbizon school.
