Tamien is a neighborhood of central San Jose, California. The neighborhood is centered around Tamien Station, one of San Jose's most important transit stations. History The neighborhood and its station are named after the Tamien people of the Ohlone nation, the indigenous inhabitants of San Jose and the Santa Clara Valley. Geography Tamien is immediately south of Washington-Guadalupe. The Guadalupe Freeway (CA-87) cuts through the neighborhood. Since the onset of the California housing crisis, the neighborhood has been earmarked by city and transit authorities for a mixed-used transit-oriented development around Tamien Station. Tamien station is an intermodal passenger transportation station in the Tamien neighborhood of central San Jose, California, served by the VTA light rail and the Caltrain commuter rail line, along with bus connections. The station has two elevated island platforms, one for each service. The two platforms are connected by a walkway at ground-level that is below the two platforms. The light rail platform is located in the center median of the State Route 87 freeway just north of the Alma Avenue overpass. The Caltrain platform is located between Lick Avenue and State Route 87, just north of Alma Avenue. Tamyen People
The Tamien people (also spelled as ''Tamyen'', ''Thamien'') are one of eight linguistic divisions of the Ohlone (Costanoan) people groups of Native Americans who lived in Northern California. The Tamien traditionally lived throughout the Santa Clara Valley. The use of the name Tamien is on record as early as 1777, it comes from the Ohlone name for the location of the first Mission Santa Clara (Mission Santa Clara de Tamine) on the Guadalupe River. Father Pena mentioned in a letter to Junipero Serra that the area around the mission was called ''Thamien'' by the native people. The missionary fathers erected the mission on January 17, 1777 at the native village of So-co-is-u-ka. Ohlone
The Ohlone, formerly known as Costanoans (from Spanish meaning 'coast dweller'), are a Native American people of the Northern California coast. When Spanish explorers and missionaries arrived in the late 18th century, the Ohlone inhabited the area along the coast from San Francisco Bay through Monterey Bay to the lower Salinas Valley. At that time they spoke a variety of related languages. The Ohlone languages make up a sub-family of the Utian language family. Older proposals place Utian within the Penutian language phylum, while newer proposals group it as Yok-Utian. Washington-Guadalupe is a neighborhood of central San Jose, California, located just south of Downtown San Jose. It is one of San Jose's most historic Chicano/Mexican-American districts. The area is a designated historic conservation district. The portion of Willow Street that passes through the district makes up the Calle Willow business district, made up primarily of Spanish-speaking businesses. California State Route 87
State Route 87 (SR 87), known as the Guadalupe Freeway or referred to by the locals as Highway 87, is a north–south state highway in San Jose, California, United States. Before being upgraded to a freeway, it was Guadalupe Parkway (and some signs still refer to it that way). For most of its length, especially in Downtown San Jose, the highway follows the course of the Guadalupe River. California Housing Crisis
Since about 1970, California has been experiencing an extended and increasing housing shortage, such that by 2018, California ranked 49th among the states of the U.S. in terms of housing units per resident. This shortage has been estimated to be 3-4 million housing units (20-30% of California's housing stock, 14 million) .
