Tamaulipas Jackrabbit
The Tamaulipas jackrabbit (''Lepus altamirae''), also known as the Tamaulipas white-sided jackrabbit, is a species of hare Endemism, endemic to the Gulf Coast of Mexico, Gulf Coast of Mexico. Taxonomy and evolution It was formerly thought to be a subspecies of the black-tailed jackrabbit (''L. californicus''), but genetic analysis found it to represent a distinct species that was actually most closely related to the Tehuantepec jackrabbit (''L. flavigularis''), with this clade being Sister group, sister to a clade containing the black-tailed and Antelope jackrabbit, antelope (''L. alleni'') jackrabbits, with the white-sided jackrabbit (''L. callotis'') being basal to both clades. It was thus reinstated as a separate species, and these results were later followed by the American Society of Mammalogists. Edward William Nelson
Edward William Nelson (May 8, 1855 – May 19, 1934) was an American naturalist and ethnologist. A collector of specimens and field naturalist of repute, he became a member of several expeditions to survey the fauna and flora. He was part of a team with Clinton Hart Merriam that took part in the Death Valley Expedition. He also explored the Yosemite Valley. A number of vertebrate species are named after him. Biography Nelson was born in Manchester, New Hampshire, on May 8, 1855, the first son of William and Martha () Nelson. Nelson and his brother then lived with his maternal grandparents in the Adirondacks when his father joined the Union Army and mother went to Baltimore as a nurse. Tamaulipan Mezquital
The Tamaulipan mezquital ( es, Mezquital Tamaulipeco) is a deserts and xeric shrublands ecoregion in the southern United States and northeastern Mexico. It covers an area of , encompassing a portion of the Gulf Coastal Plain in southern Texas, northern Tamaulipas, northeastern Coahuila, and part of Nuevo León. Distribution The Sierra Madre Oriental range to the west separates the Tamaulipan mezquital from the drier Chihuahuan Desert. The Tamaulipan matorral is a transitional ecoregion between the mezquital and the Sierra Madre Oriental pine-oak forests to the west and the Veracruz moist forests to the south. Lepus
Hares and jackrabbits are mammals belonging to the genus ''Lepus''. They are herbivores, and live solitarily or in pairs. Laguna Madre is a coastal lagoon in Northeastern Mexico. It extends along the coast of Tamaulipas for over 200 km, from the Río Bravo Delta on the north to the mouth of the Soto la Marina River near La Pesca in the south. Laguna Madre is separated from the Gulf of Mexico on the east by a number of barrier islands, including Barra Los Americanos, Barra Jesús María, and Barra Soto la Marina, and is bounded on the west by the Tamaulipan mainland. ''Vachellia'' is a genus of flowering plants in the legume family, Fabaceae, commonly known as thorn trees or acacias. It belongs to the subfamily Mimosoideae.
