Tamara Drasin
Tamara Drasin (c. 1905 – 22 February 1943), often credited as simply Tamara, was a singer and actress who introduced the song "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" in the 1933 Broadway musical ''Roberta''. Tamara Drasin is sometimes confused with two other performers of the 1930s musical era, the dancers Tamara Geva and Tamara Toumanova. Early life Drasin was born around 1905 in the village of Sorochintsï in Poltava Governorate (modern-day Ukraine), the daughter of Hinda "Eda" and Boris Drasin, a tailor. Her family moved to the U.S. in 1922. Stage career With her dark, exotic looks and throbbing vocal style, Drasin was ideal casting material for European characters in musicals of the 1930s. In '' Free for All,'' she was Marishka Tarasov; in ''Roberta,'' she was Princess Stephanie of Russian nobility; and in '' Right This Way'' and ''Leave It to Me!'', she portrayed Frenchwomen. Velyki Sorochyntsi ( uk, Великі Сорочинці; russian: Вели́кие Соро́чинцы or , translit. ''Velyki Sorochyntsi''; formerly referred to simply as Sorochyntsi) is a village in Myrhorod Raion of Poltava Oblast (province), central Ukraine, formerly a town. It can be translated as the Grand Sorochyntsi. The village is famous as the birthplace of the writer Nikolai Gogol () and the location of the Sorochyntsi Fair. In 1925–31 the town was called Neronovychi after the Bolshevik activist Yevhen Neronovych, who was executed by Ukrainian military forces in the town in 1918. The population as of 2013 was estimated at 3,809, down from 4,231 in the 2001 Census. The name of the village came either from the Slavic word ''Soroka'' (magpie) or ''Sorochka'' (shirt). "I Can Dream, Can't I?," is a popular song written by Sammy Fain with lyrics by Irving Kahal that was published in 1937. It was included in a flop musical, '' Right This Way''. Tommy Dorsey released a hit recording of it the same year, but it was in the postwar years that the song gained its greatest success. Harry James recorded a version in December 1937 for Brunswick. The best-known version was recorded by the Andrews Sisters and Gordon Jenkins Chorus and Orchestra on July 15, 1949 (Jenkins was also arranger), and released by Decca Records as catalog number 24705. ''With a Song in My Heart'' is a 1952 American biographical musical drama film that tells the story of actress and singer Jane Froman, who was crippled by an airplane crash on February 22, 1943, when the Boeing 314 Pan American Clipper flying boat she was on suffered a crash landing in the Tagus River near Lisbon, Portugal. She entertained the troops in World War II despite having to walk with crutches. The film stars Susan Hayward, Rory Calhoun, David Wayne, Thelma Ritter, Robert Wagner, Helen Westcott, and Una Merkel. Froman herself supplied Hayward's singing voice. The film was written and produced by Lamar Trotti and directed by Walter Lang. Ellen Jane Froman (November 10, 1907 – April 22, 1980) was an American actress and singer. During her thirty-year career, she performed on stage, radio and television despite chronic health problems due to injuries sustained in a 1943 plane crash. Her life story was told in the 1952 film '' With a Song in My Heart''. She was portrayed by Susan Hayward, who was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance. Early life and education Ellen Jane Froman was born in University City, Missouri, the daughter of Anna Tillman ( Barcafer) and Elmer Ellsworth Froman. The United Service Organizations Inc. (USO) is an American nonprofit-charitable corporation that provides live entertainment, such as comedians, actors and musicians, social facilities, and other programs to members of the United States Armed Forces and their families. Since 1941, it has worked in partnership with the Department of War, and later with the Department of Defense (DoD), relying heavily on private contributions and on funds, goods, and services from various corporate and individual donors. Although it is congressionally chartered, it is not a government agency. Founded during World War II, the USO sought to be the GI's "home away from home" and began a tradition of entertaining the troops and providing social facilities.
