Tallassee And Montgomery Railway
The Tallassee and Montgomery Railway was a railroad which operated between a connection with the Western Railway of Alabama at Milstead and the Tallapoosa River textile mill town of Tallassee, Alabama in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The railroad was built by the owners of the Tallassee Falls Manufacturing Company to transport the company's products to markets. Construction began in 1895 and the line began operation on February 6, 1896. In 1912 the Tallassee and Montgomery was purchased by the Union Springs and Northern Railway to become part of the Birmingham and Southeastern Railway system. The Tallassee and Montgomery Railway through truss bridge over the Tallapoosa River near Milstead still stands and is easily visible from State Route 229 just north of I-85 exit 26. Western Railway Of Alabama
The Western Railway of Alabama (WRA) also seen as "WofA" was created as the Western Railroad of Alabama by the owners of the Montgomery & West Point Railroad (M&WP) in 1860. It was built to further the M&WP's development West from Montgomery, Alabama to Selma, Alabama. When the line was constructed in 1870, the M&WP was merged into the WRA, creating a line from Selma to West Point, Georgia. It served Auburn, Alabama and connected in Opelika, Alabama to the Central of Georgia line from Columbus, Georgia to Birmingham, Alabama. Although it was partially owned by the Central of Georgia around the turn from the nineteenth to the twentieth century, it did not end up being owned by Norfolk Southern when that company came into existence due to the merger of the CofG's parent, the Southern Railway, and the Norfolk & Western Railway. Milstead, Alabama
Milstead, also known as Cowles or Cowles Station, is an unincorporated community in Macon County, Alabama, United States. History The community was named after the location where a gristmill once stood by the Tallapoosa River. Milstead was located at the junction of the Tallassee and Montgomery Railway and the Western Railway of Alabama. Fort Decatur, a fort built during the Creek War, was located near Milstead. John Sevier died here while conducting a survey of Creek lands. A post office operated under the name Cowle's Station from 1867 to 1895, under the name Cowles from 1895 to 1896, and under the name Milstead from 1896 to 1964. Auburn University maintains the E.V. Tallassee (pronounced ) is a city on the Tallapoosa River, located in both Elmore and Tallapoosa counties in the U.S. state of Alabama. At the 2020 census, the population was 4,763. State Route 229 (SR 229) is a route that serves as a connection between Interstate 85 (I-85) south of Tallassee to SR 63 south of Lake Martin in Elmore County. Route description The southern terminus of SR 229 is located at Exit 26 off I-85 south of Millstead. From Millstead, the route takes a northerly track to Tallassee. In Tallassee, the route briefly shares a concurrency with SR 14 whilst traveling in a northwesterly direction. Just to the south of Burlington, it splits from SR 14 and resumes a northerly track to Red Hill. At Red Hill, the route takes a turn to the west towards its northern terminus at SR 63. Interstate 85 (I-85) is a part of the Interstate Highway System that runs from Montgomery, Alabama, to Petersburg, Virginia. In Alabama, the Interstate Highway runs from I-65 in Montgomery northeast to the Georgia state line near Valley. I-85 is the primary highway between Montgomery and Atlanta.
