Lightnin' Hopkins
Samuel John "Lightnin" Hopkins (March 15, 1912 – January 30, 1982) was an American country blues singer, songwriter, guitarist and occasional pianist from Centerville, Texas. In 2010, ''Rolling Stone'' magazine ranked him No. 71 on its list of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time. The musicologist Robert "Mack" McCormick opined that Hopkins is "the embodiment of the jazz-and-poetry spirit, representing its ancient form in the single creator whose words and music are one act". He was a notable influence on Townes Van Zandt, Hank Williams, Jr., and a generation of blues musicians like Stevie Ray Vaughan, whose Grammy winning song "Rude Mood" was directly inspired by the Texan's song "Hopkins' Sky Hop." Blues
Blues is a music genre and musical form which originated in the Deep South of the United States around the 1860s. Blues incorporated spirituals, work songs, field hollers, shouts, chants, and rhymed simple narrative ballads from the African-American culture. The blues form is ubiquitous in jazz, rhythm and blues, and rock and roll, and is characterized by the call-and-response pattern (the blues scale and specific chord progressions) of which the twelve-bar blues is the most common. Blue notes (or "worried notes"), usually thirds, fifths or sevenths flattened in pitch, are also an essential part of the sound. Blues shuffles or walking bass reinforce the trance-like rhythm and form a repetitive effect known as the groove. Jewel Records (Shreveport Record Label)
Jewel Records was an American independent record label, founded in 1963 by Stan Lewis and based in Shreveport, Louisiana. It had two subsidiary labels, Paula and Ronn. The first of many retail record stores, called Stan's Record Shop, was opened in 1948. Later, Stan Lewis purchased and reissued the catalogues of Cobra Records, Chief Records, USA Records and JOB Records. Among the artists for Jewel/Paula/Ronn were Buster Benton, Frank Frost, Lowell Fulson, John Lee Hooker, Lightnin' Hopkins, John Fred and his Playboy Band, Toussaint McCall, The Uniques, Jerry McCain, Memphis Slim, Little Johnny Taylor, and Justin Wilson. Stan Lewis (record Label Owner)
Stanley Joseph Lewis (July 5, 1927 – July 15, 2018) was an American record label owner, in Shreveport, Louisiana. Biography Born in Shreveport, Lewis set up Stan's Music Shop there in 1948. The business eventually grew to six retail stores, a nationwide mail-order and distributor service, and multiple record labels. Lewis distributed rhythm and blues records from independent labels including Atlantic, Chess and Specialty, and advertised his mail order business on radio stations KWKH (Shreveport, Louisiana), KAAY (Little Rock, Arkansas), and John R.'s powerful nightly show on WLAC-AM (Nashville, Tennessee). Lewis's early customers were the young Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, and Bob Dylan. In 1954, Lewis began to produce R&B and rock and roll records; the first was Lowell Fulson's "Reconsider Baby," released on Checker Records. Billy Bizor
Billy Bizor (September 3, 1913 – April 5, 1969) was an American Texas blues harmonicist, singer and songwriter. He was musically associated with his cousin Lightnin' Hopkins, on some of whose 1960s albums Bizor played harmonica and sang backing vocals. Bizor's only solo recordings took place in 1968 and 1969, but these were not released until 1989. Life and career Bizor was born near Middleton, Leon County, Texas, United States, ten months before the outbreak of World War I. Details of his early life are scant, but he performed locally from the 1930s in a semi-professional manner without any tangible success. He languished in total obscurity, and barely changed his playing methodology over the years. His fortunes changed somewhat courtesy of the American folk music revival, blues revival in the 1960s, along with starting recording as a backing musician to his cousin, Lightnin' Hopkins. Elmore Nixon
Elmore Nixon (November 17, 1933 – June 1975) was an American jump blues pianist and singer. His piano playing accompanied several artists on their recordings, including Peppermint Harris, Clifton Chenier and Lightnin' Hopkins, as well as releasing a number of singles under his own name. Details of his life outside of his recording career are sketchy. Biography He was born in Crowley, Louisiana, United States. Little is known of his early life, although in 1939 his family relocated to Houston, Texas, where he grew up. He remained in Houston for the rest of his life. It is presumed that he learned to play the piano whilst undergoing training to join the church. In October 1947, at the age of 13, Nixon supplied piano accompaniment to Peppermint Nelson's recording of "Peppermith Boogie" for Gold Star Records.
