Tala (Hindu Architecture)
In Hindu temple architecture, ''tala'' is a tier or storey of a ''shikhara'', ''vimana'', or ''gopuram''. It is an important compositional element, which is especially distinct in the Dravidian architecture. Dravidian vimanas Vimanas above the sanctum are typically shaped as a four-sided pyramid A pyramid (from el, πυραμίς ') is a structure whose outer surfaces are triangular and converge to a single step at the top, making the shape roughly a pyramid in the geometric sense. The base of a pyramid can be trilateral, quadrilat ..., consisting of progressively smaller talas. Dravidian vimanas can be classified as one-story (called ''ekatala''), two-story (''dvi-tala''), three-story (''tri-tala''), and so on. Usually, vimanas have up to seven stories. However, the tallest gopurams and vimanas, such as that of the Ranganathaswamy Temple in Srirangam, may have up to 13 talas. Importantly, the ''kuta'' at the top of a vimana does not count as a separate tala. As a maj ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Samoan Tālā
The tālā is the currency of Samoa. It is divided into 100 ''sene''. The terms ''tālā'' and ''sene'' are the equivalents or transliteration of the English words ''dollar'' and '' cent'', in the Samoan language. Its symbol is $, or ''WS$'' to distinguish it from other currencies named ''dollar''. The word 'tala' is also derived from the German word 'Thaler', and pronounced the same. The tālā was introduced on 10 July 1967, following the country's political independence from New Zealand in 1962. Until that time, Samoa had used the pound, with coins from New Zealand and its own banknotes. The tālā replaced the pound at a rate of 2 tālā = 1 pound and was, therefore, equal to the New Zealand dollar. The tālā remained equal to the New Zealand dollar until 1975. The symbol WS$ is still used for the tālā, representing the country's previous name Western Samoa, used up to 1997, when the word ''Western'' was officially removed and the country became known as just ''Samoa''. ... Tala (goddess)
Tala, based on Hindu goddess Tara, is the name of the goddess of the morning and evening star in Tagalog mythology. Her origins are varied depending on the region. Golden Tara, the Majapahit-era gold statue of Hindu deity Tara or Tagalog adoption Tala was found in 1918 in Agusan.H. Otley Beyer, "Outline Review of Philippine Archaeology by Islands and Provinces," Philippine Journal of Science, Vol.77,Nos.34 (July–August 1947),pp. 205-374 The legend of Tala has very close parallels to legends among non-Filipino cultures such as the India tribes of Bihar, Savara and Bhuiya, as well as the Indianized Semang (Malay tribe). The most popular myth of Tala is that she is one of the three daughters of Bathala to a mortal woman. Her sisters include Mayari, the goddess of the moon, and Hanan, the goddess of morning. She is known to have supported the creation of the Tagalog traditional constellations. Tala used light spheres or orbs to ferry men to safety at night. The natives' interp ...
