Takumi Furukawa
was a Japanese film director. Career Born in Tokyo, Furukawa graduated from the College of Art at Nihon University in 1941 and entered the Nikkatsu studio first in the screenwriting division before becoming an assistant director. After serving in the war, he returned to work at Daiei Film before returning to Nikkatsu when it resumed producing films in 1954. While working as an assistant director, he assisted such directors as Tomotaka Tasaka, Kajiro Yamamoto, Akira Kurosawa, and Heinosuke Gosho. He made his directorial debut in 1955 with ''Jigoku no Yōjinbō'', which starred Rentarō Mikuni and for which he wrote the script. He is most known for directing ''Season of the Sun'' in 1956, which was a box office success and helped launch the career of Yujiro Ishihara. His ''Cruel Gun Story'' (1964) was released on DVD with English subtitles by Eclipse from the Criterion Collection. Rentarō Mikuni
(also sometimes credited as 三国連太郎) (January 20, 1923 – April 14, 2013) was a Japanese film actor from Gunma Prefecture. He appeared in over 150 films since making his screen debut in 1951, and won three Japanese Academy Awards for Best Actor, and a further seven nominations. He also won two Blue Ribbon Awards for Best Actor, in 1960 and in 1989. The 1987 film '' Shinran: Path to Purity'' (親鸞：白い道), which he wrote and directed, was awarded the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival. Actor Kōichi Satō is his son. Biography Mikuni was born the son of a woman who had become pregnant while working as an indentured servant. Eclipse (DVD Brand)
Eclipse is a brand for a line of DVD film series released by The Criterion Collection. It debuted on March 27, 2007. The brand was created to produce budget-priced, high-quality DVD editions of hard-to-find films. The DVDs are released in boxed sets that have contained between two and seven films, and focus on a specific director, film studio, genre, or theme. Typically, they are released monthly. In order to keep prices low, the films do not receive the same degree of remastering or any of the special features generally associated with Criterion Collection titles. When Criterion announced that all of their future releases would be in dual format (DVD + Blu-ray) they specifically said that Eclipse was meant to be available in a cheaper form and thus would continue to be on DVD only. is a 1956 black-and-white Japanese film directed by Takumi Furukawa. This film is a 1956 feature film adaptation of Shintarō Ishihara's novel ''Season of the Sun''. It was also noteworthy because it marked the cinema debut, in a supporting role, of Yujiro Ishihara (brother of the author of the novel), who went on to become one of Japan's most successful film stars of the late 1950s and early 1960s (and who remains a cultural icon following his untimely death in 1987). Plot The film tells the story of a group of high school boxing team members who spend their days drinking, sailing and chasing girls, and who more often than not spend their nights getting into brawls. Heinosuke Gosho
was a Japanese film director and screenwriter who directed Japan's first sound film, '' The Neighbor's Wife and Mine'', in 1931. His films are mostly associated with the shomin-geki (lit. "common people drama") genre. Among his most noted works are ''Where Chimneys Are Seen'', '' An Inn at Osaka'', ''Takekurabe'' and ''Yellow Crow''. Life Gosho was born on January 24, 1902, in Kanda, Tokyo, to merchant Heisuke Gosho and his father's geisha mistress. At the age of five, after Heisuke's eldest son died, Gosho left his mother to be the successor to his father's wholesale business. He studied business at Keio University, graduating in 1923. Through his father's close relation to film director Yasujirō Shimazu, Gosho was able to join the Shochiku film studios and worked as assistant director to Shimazu.
