Taillon
Taillon is a provincial electoral district in the Montérégie region of Quebec, Canada that elects members to the National Assembly of Quebec. It comprises part of the borough of Le Vieux-Longueuil of the city of Longueuil. It was created for the 1966 election from Verchères and Chambly electoral districts. It was named after former Quebec Premier Louis-Olivier Taillon who was in power for four days in 1886 and from 1892 to 1896. It is best known as the riding of Parti Québécois founder René Lévesque, who served as premier from 1976 to 1985. For the better part of four decades after the PQ seized it in 1976, Taillon was a stronghold for both the PQ and the sovereigntist cause. In the 1995 Quebec referendum it voted 61% for Quebec to separate. However, in 2018, the Coalition Avenir Québec narrowly won it amid its near-sweep of Montérégie. Louis-Olivier Taillon
Sir Louis-Olivier Taillon (September 26, 1840 – April 25, 1923) was a Canadian lawyer and politician. He was the eighth premier of Quebec, serving two separate terms. Political career Taillon's first term of office was just four days, from January 25 to January 29, 1887. This term came at the end of the Conservative government of his predecessor John Jones Ross. Ross had lost the 1886 Quebec election, but had tried to cling to power in a minority government for a few more months. Taillon was Leader of the Opposition from 1887 until 1890, when he lost the 1890 election and his own seat. He briefly returned to the practice of law, but following the removal of Liberal Honoré Mercier from office by the Lieutenant-Governor of Quebec, Taillon became minister without portfolio in the government of Charles-Eugène Boucher de Boucherville. 2012 Quebec General Election
The 2012 Quebec general election took place in the Canadian province of Quebec on September 4, 2012. Lieutenant Governor Pierre Duchesne dissolved the National Assembly on August 1, 2012, following Premier Jean Charest's request. The Parti Québécois were elected to a minority government, with Pauline Marois becoming the first woman to be Premier of Quebec. The Quebec Liberal Party took second place, with Premier Jean Charest losing his seat. The newly formed party Coalition Avenir Québec led by François Legault took third place, while Québec solidaire took 2 seats out of the 125. Pauline Marois
Pauline Marois (; born March 29, 1949) is a retired Canadian politician, who served as the 30th premier of Quebec from 2012 to 2014. Marois had been a member of the National Assembly in various ridings since 1981 as a member of the Parti Québécois (PQ), serving as party leader from 2007 to 2014. She is the first female premier of Quebec. Born in a working-class family, Marois studied social work at Université Laval, married businessman Claude Blanchet and became an activist in grassroots organizations and in the Parti Québécois (a social democratic party advocating Quebec's independence). 2007 Quebec General Election
The 2007 Quebec general election was held in the Canadian province of Quebec on March 26, 2007 to elect members of the 38th National Assembly of Quebec. The Quebec Liberal Party led by Premier Jean Charest managed to win a plurality of seats, but were reduced to a minority government, Quebec's first in 129 years, since the 1878 general election. The Action démocratique du Québec, in a major breakthrough, became the official opposition. The Parti Québécois was relegated to third-party status for the first time since the 1973 election. The 2008 Quebec general election was held in the Canada, Canadian Provinces and territories of Canada, province of Quebec on December 8, 2008. The Quebec Liberal Party, under incumbent Premier Jean Charest, was re-elected with a majority government, marking the first time since the 1950s (when the Union Nationale (Quebec), Union Nationale of Maurice Duplessis won four consecutive elections) that a party or leader was elected to a third consecutive mandate, and the first time for the Liberals since the 1930s, when Louis-Alexandre Taschereau was Premier. René Lévesque
René Lévesque (; August 24, 1922 – November 1, 1987) was a Québécois politician and journalist who served as the 23rd premier of Quebec from 1976 to 1985. He was the first Québécois political leader since Confederation to attempt, through a referendum, to negotiate the political independence of Quebec. Starting his career as a reporter, and radio and television host, he later became known for his eminent role in Quebec's nationalization of hydro, and as an ardent defender of Quebec sovereignty. Marie Malavoy (born March 23, 1948, in Berlin, Germany) is a Canadian politician and teacher. She was a member of the National Assembly of Quebec for the riding of Taillon in the Montérégie region for the Parti Québécois. Following the PQ victory in 2012, Malavoy entered the cabinet as Minister of Education. Malavoy attended the Collège Marie de France, earning a bachelor's degree in philosophy. She later attended the Université de Montréal, earning a second bachelor's degree, and later a master's degree in social service, also earning a diploma in pastoral studies. Le Vieux-Longueuil is a borough in the city of Longueuil. From 2002 to 2006, Le Vieux-Longueuil borough stood for what used to be the city of Longueuil from 1969 to 2002. The former city of Longueuil was composed of 3 cities merged in the 1960s: Ville Jacques-Cartier, Montréal-Sud and Longueuil. Longueuil () is a city in the province of Quebec, Canada. It is the seat of the Montérégie administrative region and the central city of the urban agglomeration of Longueuil. It sits on the south shore of the Saint Lawrence River directly across from Montreal. Richard Bélisle (born 20 July 1946 in Montreal, Quebec) is a Canadian politician who was a member of the House of Commons of Canada from 1993 to 1997. His career has been in health and safety fields. He was elected in the La Prairie electoral district under the Bloc Québécois party in the 1993 federal election, thus he served in the 35th Canadian Parliament.
