Tagalog Language
Tagalog (, ; ; '' Baybayin'': ) is an Austronesian language spoken as a first language by the ethnic Tagalog people, who make up a quarter of the population of the Philippines, and as a second language by the majority. Its standardized form, officially named ''Filipino'', is the national language of the Philippines, and is one of two official languages, alongside English. Tagalog is closely related to other Philippine languages, such as the Bikol languages, Ilocano, the Bisayan languages, Kapampangan, and Pangasinan, and more distantly to other Austronesian languages, such as the Formosan languages of Taiwan, Indonesian, Malay, Hawaiian, Māori, and Malagasy. Classification Tagalog is a Central Philippine language within the Austronesian language family. Being Malayo-Polynesian, it is related to other Austronesian languages, such as Malagasy, Javanese, Indonesian, Malay, Tetum (of Timor), and Yami (of Taiwan). It is closely related to the languages spoken in the Bi ...

Old Tagalog
Old Tagalog, also known as Old Filipino ( tl, Lumang Tagalog; Baybayin: pre-virama: , post-virama rus kudlit ; post-virama amudpod ), is the earliest form of the Tagalog language during the Classical period. It is the primary language of pre-colonial Tondo, Namayan and Maynila. The language originated from the Proto-Philippine language and evolved to Classical Tagalog, which was the basis for Modern Tagalog. Old Tagalog uses the Tagalog script or Baybayin, one of the scripts indigenous to the Philippines. Etymology The word ''Tagalog'' is derived from the endonym (''taga-ilog'', "river dweller"), composed of (''tagá-'', "native of" or "from") and (''ílog'', "river"). Very little is known about the ancient history of the language; linguists such as David Zorc and Robert Blust speculate that the Tagalogs and other Central Philippine ethno-linguistic groups had originated in Northeastern Mindanao or the Eastern Visayas. History Old Tagalog is one of the Central Philip ...

Batangas Tagalog
Batangas Tagalog (also known as Batangan or Batangueño ) is a dialect of the Tagalog language spoken primarily in the province of Batangas and in portions of Cavite, Quezon, Laguna and on the island of Mindoro. It is characterized by a strong accent and a vocabulary and grammar closely related to Old Tagalog. Grammar The most obvious difference is the use of the passive imperfect in place of the present progressive tense. In Manila, this is done by inserting the infix ''-um-'' after the first syllable and repeating the first syllable. In the Batangan dialect, this form is created by adding the prefix ''na-'' to the word. This conjugation is odd, because it would be the passive past to Manileños. The answer to ''Nasaan si Pedro?'' (Where is Pedro?) is ''Nakain ng isda!'' (He's eating a fish!). To those unfamiliar with this usage, the statement might mean "He was eaten by a fish!"; however, a Batangas Tagalog user can distinguish between the two apparently-identical forms by ...

Tagalog Script
(, ''pre-kudlít'': , ''virama-krus-kudlít'': , ''virama-pamudpod'': ; also formerly commonly incorrectly known as alibata) is a Philippine script. The script is an abugida belonging to the family of the Brahmic scripts. Geographically, it was widely used in Luzon and other parts of the Philippines prior to and during the 16th and 17th centuries before being replaced by the Latin alphabet during the period of Spanish colonization. It was used in the Tagalog language and, to a lesser extent, Kapampangan-speaking areas; its use spread to the Ilocanos in the early 17th century. In the 19th and 20th centuries, survived and evolved into multiple forms—the Tagbanwa script of Palawan, and the Hanuno'o and Buhid scripts of Mindoro—and was used to create the constructed modern Kulitan script of the Kapampangan and the Ibalnan script of the Palawan people. Under the Unicode Standard and ISO 15924, the script is encoded as the Tagalog block. The Archives of the University of Sa ...

Tagalog People
The Tagalog people ( tl, Mga Tagalog; Baybayin: ᜋᜅ ᜆᜄᜎᜓᜄ᜔) are the largest ethnolinguistic group in the Philippines, numbering at around 30 million. An Austronesian people, the Tagalog have a well developed society due to their cultural heartland, Manila, being the capital city of the Philippines. They are native to the Metro Manila and Calabarzon regions of southern Luzon, and comprise the majority in the provinces of Bulacan, Bataan, Nueva Ecija and Aurora in Central Luzon and in the islands of Marinduque and Mindoro in Mimaropa. Etymology The commonly perpetuated origin for the endonym "Tagalog" is the term ''tagá-ilog'', which means "people from longthe river" (the prefix ''tagá-'' meaning "coming from" or "native of"). However, this explanation is a mistranslation of the correct term ''tagá-álog'', which means "people from the ford". Historical usage Before the colonial period, the term "Tagalog" was originally used to differentiate river dwelle ...

Southern Tagalog
Southern Tagalog ( fil, Timog Katagalugan, also known colloquially as ''Rehiyong Timog Tagalog''), designated as Region IV, was an administrative region in the Philippines that comprised the current regions of Calabarzon and Mimaropa, the province of Aurora of Central Luzon (then part of Quezon Province until 1979), and several cities of Metro Manila (formerly part of Rizal, except for Valenzuela, which was part of Bulacan, and for Quezon City and Pasay which were and are independent cities). The name remains as a geographical region only, which exempts Aurora. It was partitioned into the two regions on May 17, 2002. History Southern Tagalog was the largest region in the Philippines in terms of both land area and population. The ''2000 Census of Population and Housin''g showed the region having a total of 11,793,655 people, which comprised 15.42 percent of the 76.5 million population of the country at that time. Quezon City was the designated regional center of Southern Ta ...

Tagalog Republic
Tagalog Republic ( fil, Republika ng Katagalugan, more precisely "Republic of the Tagalog Nation/People"; es, República Tagala) is a term used to refer to two revolutionary governments involved in the Philippine Revolution against the Spanish Empire and the Philippine–American War. Both were connected to the ''Katipunan'' revolutionary movement. Etymology The term ''Tagalog'' commonly refers to both an ethno-linguistic group in the Philippines and their language. ''Katagalugan'' often refers to the Tagalog-speaking regions of the island of Luzon in the Philippine archipelago. However, the ''Katipunan'' secret society extended the meaning of these terms to all of the natives in the Philippine islands. The society's primer explains its use of ''Tagalog'' in a footnote: The revolutionary Carlos Ronquillo wrote in his memoirs: In this respect, ''Katagalugan'' may be translated as the "Tagalog nation." Andrés Bonifacio, a founding member of the ''Katipunan'' and late ...
