Taffs Well Station
Taffs Well railway station is a railway station serving the village of Taff's Well, Rhondda Cynon Taf, Wales, as well as neighbouring Gwaelod-y-Garth, Cardiff. It is located on the Merthyr Line and the Rhondda Line. Passenger services are provided by Transport for Wales. The station was first opened on this site by the Taff Vale Railway in 1863. Junctions Two routes formerly diverged from the TVR's main line between Cardiff and Merthyr here – the Rhymney Railway's original main line northwards to and via Junction (opened in 1858) and a much more recent spur to Nantgarw Colliery opened by British Railways in 1952 to permit the closure of most of the surviving Cardiff Railway route beyond Coryton. The Rhymney line, which diverged at ''Walnut Tree Junction'' just south of the station was known locally as the ''Big Hill'', due to its severe gradients (as steep as 1 in 48) for northbound trains. Taff's Well
Taff's Well () is a semi-rural village, Community (Wales), community and electoral ward located at the south easterly tip of Rhondda Cynon Taf, to the north of Cardiff, the Capital city, capital city of Wales. Known locally as the 'Gates to the South Wales Valleys, Valleys', it is separated from Gwaelod Y Garth by the River Taff. Taff's Well is distinguished because it contains the only Hot spring, thermal spring in Wales. The tepid water is thought to rise along a fault-line from the Carboniferous Limestone, in somewhat similar manner to the warm springs at Bristol and Bath. Various religious groups regard it as a spiritual site. Nantgarw Colliery
Nantgarw Colliery was a coal mine and later developed Coking coal works, located in the village on Nantgarw, Mid Glamorgan, Wales located just north of Cardiff. Opened in 1910, it closed in 1986. The site is now redeveloped as the industrial estate Parc Nantgarw. Craig Yr Allt Craig Yr Allt Colliery was situated south of Nantgarw village. However, whenever the River Taff flooded, water frequently entered its workings, and it was abandoned in 1878. Development Thomas Taylor of Pontypridd began the development of Nantgarw colliery in May 1910, near the base of the Caerphilly Syncline seam. The sinking of the twin shafts in 1911 reached the coal seam at a depth of more than in 1915, placing them below sea level, making Nantgarw the deepest pit to be sunk in the South Wales Coalfield up to that time. Radyr
Radyr ( cy, Radur) is an outer suburb of Cardiff, about northwest of Cardiff city centre. Radyr is part of Radyr and Morganstown Community, for which the 2011 Census recorded a population of 6,417. Rhymney Valley
The Rhymney Valley () is one of the South Wales valleys, with the Rhymney River forming the border between the historic counties of Glamorgan and Monmouthshire. Great Western Railway
The Great Western Railway (GWR) was a British railway company that linked London with the southwest, west and West Midlands of England and most of Wales. It was founded in 1833, received its enabling Act of Parliament on 31 August 1835 and ran its first trains in 1838 with the initial route completed between London and Bristol in 1841. It was engineered by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, who chose a broad gauge of —later slightly widened to —but, from 1854, a series of amalgamations saw it also operate standard-gauge trains; the last broad-gauge services were operated in 1892. Coryton Railway Station, Cardiff
Coryton railway station serves Coryton and Pantmawr in Cardiff, Wales. It is the terminus of the Coryton Line north of Cardiff Central via Cardiff Queen Street. Passenger services are provided by Transport for Wales as part of the Valley Lines network. History The station was opened by the Cardiff Railway on 1 March 1911 as ''Coryton Halt''; it was renamed ''Coryton Halt (Glam)'' by the Great Western Railway in 1926, and relocated in 1931. Cardiff Railway
From 1839 the Trustees of the Marquis of Bute, operated a large dock operation in Cardiff, the "Bute Docks". This was very successful, but was overwhelmed by the huge volume of coal exported through Cardiff. At the same time it was seen that railway companies, especially the Taff Vale Railway (TVR), were making money conveying the coal to the docks. The Bute Docks company decided to built a railway from Pontypridd to their dock; they obtained Parliamentary authority for part of the route in 1898, and changed the company name to the Cardiff Railway. To be successful, they needed to make a junction with their main rival, the TVR, at Treforest. A single mineral train traversed the junction in 1909 but legal challenges prevented any further use. British Railways (BR), which from 1965 traded as British Rail, was a state-owned company that operated most of the overground rail transport in Great Britain from 1948 to 1997. Rhymney Railway
The Rhymney Railway was a railway company in South Wales, founded to transport minerals and materials to and from collieries and ironworks in the Rhymney Valley of South Wales, and to docks in Cardiff. It opened a main line in 1858, and a limited passenger service was operated in addition. The first line was dependent on the cooperation of the parallel Taff Vale Railway (TVR) for part of the transit, and this relationship was uneasy; the Rhymney Railway built an independent line to Cardiff in 1871.
