Taeko Onuki
is a Japanese singer and songwriter. She is influential in the city pop genre. Early life and career Taeko Onuki was born in Suginami Ward, Tokyo, in 1953. Her father was Kenichiro Onuki, a member of the Japanese Special Attack Units during the Second World War. In 1973, she formed ''Sugar Babe'' with musicians Tatsuro Yamashita and Kunio Muramatsu. Because the dominant music style at the time was hard rock, audiences did not respond too warmly, and the group ended up splitting only three years later. In 1976, Onuki began her solo career by releasing the album ''Grey Skies,'' which carried the same sound as Sugar Babe. Her second, landmark album ''Sunshower'' was released the following year in 1977 and had a much different style, mixing pop music and jazz. Suginami
is a special ward in Tokyo, Japan. The ward refers to itself as Suginami City in English. As of June 1, 2022, Suginami has an estimated population of 588,354 and a population density of 17,274 persons per km2. The total area is 34.06 km2. Geography Suginami occupies the western part of the ward area of Tokyo. Its neighbors include these special wards: to the east, Shibuya and Nakano; to the north, Nerima; and to the south, Setagaya. Its western neighbors are the cities of Mitaka and Musashino. The Kanda River passes through Suginami. ''A Long Vacation'' is an album by Japanese musician Eiichi Ohtaki, released on March 21, 1981. It sold over a million copies and won Best Album at the 23rd Japan Record Awards. It has been called one of the greatest Japanese rock albums of all time, including by ''Rolling Stone Japan''. Background Several songs on ''A Long Vacation'' were influenced by American record producer Phil Spector and his Wall of Sound formula. But the closing track, "Farewell Trans-Siberian Railway", was intended as a tribute to English record producer Joe Meek. All three of Ohtaki's former Happy End bandmates contributed to ''A Long Vacation''; Takashi Matsumoto wrote the lyrics for every song except one, Shigeru Suzuki contributed guitar, and Haruomi Hosono played bass guitar. ''Sunshower'' (stylized in all caps) is the second studio album by Taeko Ohnuki, released on July 25, 1977. The album combines elements of J-pop, smooth jazz, rock, and city pop. A commercial disappointment at the time of its release, the album later garnered critical acclaim. Background Recorded and released in 1977, ''Sunshower'' was Ohnuki's second solo album following the breakup of in 1975, and her last original album under the label. According to the producer Seiji Kuniyoshi, it was more crossover-flavored than the first album which was closer to Sugar Babe. In those days, crossover was established and everyone was influenced more or less, so this direction was set naturally in the meeting for album production. It was decided that all songs would be arranged by Ryuichi Sakamoto, and also that the most talked-about musicians at the time would participate. Shuichi Murakami
(January 1, 1951 – March 9, 2021) was a Japanese jazz drummer and session musician. Career Murakami was born in Nishinomiya. He first learned to play French horn, but switched to classical percussion as a teenager before settling on the drum kit. He worked extensively as a sideman on jazz sessions in the 1970s and 1980s, with, among others, Sadao Watanabe, Yosuke Yamashita, Kazumi Watanabe, Akira Sakata, and Takashi Kako. He founded the group Ponta Box (featuring sidemen Masahiro Sayama and Masatoshi Mizuno), which recorded three albums for JVC Victor and appeared at the 1995 Montreux Jazz Festival, and has recorded several albums under his own name. He also worked as a session musician for J-pop stars for several decades. Murakami died on March 9, 2021 after suffering thalamic bleeding at the age of 70.
