Taean
Taean County () is a county in Chungcheongnam-do, South Korea. Taean Haean National Park is located within Taean County, and is known for its clear seas, unpolluted soils, coastal flora, tidal flats, coasts, and white sand. It includes thirty different beaches; one of these, Mallipo Beach, is considered one of the three most beautiful in Korea and is over three kilometers long. This beach is also the site of the 2007 Korea oil spill. The Korean government designated Taean Haean National Park in 1978. It consists of of land. There are about 130 islands in the park, and 250 species of flora thrive there. Chollipo Arboretum in Sowon-myeon, founded in 1979 by naturalized US-expatriate Min Byung Gal ( Carl Ferris Miller), is a 64ha (158 acre) private botanical garden housing more than 6900 different species of plants collected from more than 60 countries. Taean Seaside National Park ( ko, 태안해안국립공원, 泰安海岸國立公園) in Taean County was designated as the 13th National Park in South Korea in 1978. The total area is about with being marine area. It contains various coastal ecosystems and variety of coastal landmarks such as 26 beaches, sand dunes, rocky formations, and 72 islands along the 230 km coastline. The MT ''Hebei Spirit'' oil spill was a major oil spill in South Korea that began on the morning of 7 December 2007 local time, with ongoing environmental and economic effects. Government officials called it South Korea's worst oil spill ever, surpassing a spill that took place in 1995. This oil spill was about one-third of the size of the ''Exxon Valdez'' oil spill. Background At about 7:30 local time on 7 December 2007 (2230 UTC on 6 December 2007), a crane barge owned by Samsung Heavy Industries being towed by a tug collided with the anchored Hong Kong registered crude carrier ''Hebei Spirit'' (), carrying of crude oil. The incident occurred near the port of Daesan on the Yellow Sea coast of Taean County. The barge was floating free after the cable linking it to the tug snapped in the rough seas. Carl Ferris Miller
Carl Ferris Miller (1921–2002), also known by the Korean name Min Byung-gal (민병갈), was an American-born South Korean banker and arborist. Dr CF Miller is the best known as the founder of the Chollipo Arboretum Foundation in Taean-gun, South Chungcheong Province, South Korea, and one of the first Americans to be naturalized as a South Korean citizen. Early life Miller, a native of Pittston, Pennsylvania, was a Phi Beta Kappa chemistry major in college. With the outbreak of World War II, he studied Japanese at the US Navy Japanese/Oriental Language School at the University of Colorado at Boulder. He went on to serve as a Naval Intelligence Officer. In 1945 he was assigned to seek out Japanese soldiers still on the island of Okinawa, questioning village residents during the day. DuWoong Wetland
The DuWoong wetland is a coastal sand dune in South Korea. The DuWoong wetland is located in the south of the Sinduri coastal sand dune at Sinduri beach, Wonbukmeon, Taean, South Chungcheong Do. Its coastal length is 3.4 km and its width is 500 m, which is relatively wide. The Sinduri coastal sand dune was formed by sands carried to the coast many years ago. Characteristics The DuWoong wetland is a typical sand dune wetland. The term "sand dune wetland" denotes wetlands formed by sand dunes, but the DuWoong wetland is the only one which has the form of a lake with water. Unlike other wetlands, the DuWoong wetland's base is formed with sand, and it does not allow sea water to penetrate even though it is located at the seashore. Hoseo (; literally "west of the lake") is a region coinciding with the former Chungcheong Province in what is now South Korea.
