TG4 Original Programming
TG4 ( ga, TG Ceathair, ) is an Irish free-to-air public service television network. The channel launched on 31 October 1996 and is available online and through its on demand service TG4 Player in Ireland and beyond. TG4 was formerly known as (TnaG), before a rebranding campaign in 1999. TG4 was the third national station to be launched in Ireland, after RTÉ One in 1961 (as ) and RTÉ Two in 1978. It was followed by a fourth channel, TV3 (now called Virgin Media One), in 1998. The channel has 650,000 viewers who tune into the channel each day to view a broad programming policy. It has been reported to have a share of 2% of the national television market in the Republic of Ireland and 3% of the national television market in Northern Ireland. TeilifÃs Na Gaeilge (corporation)
TeilifÃs na Gaeilge is the corporation in charge of operating the Irish language television channels TG4 and Cúla 4; the corporation is a public service broadcaster. The corporation was created on 1 April 2007 in order to independently manage the TG4 television station which had up to this point been managed by Raidió TeilifÃs Éireann since 1996 when broadcasting operations commenced. The pound (Irish: ) was the currency of the Republic of Ireland until 2002. Its ISO 4217 code was IEP, and the symbol was £ (or IR£ for distinction). RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta (; "Radio of the Gaeltacht"), abbreviated RnaG, is an Irish language radio station owned and operated by Raidió TeilifÃs Éireann (RTÉ). The station is available on FM in Ireland and via satellite and on the Internet. It celebrated 40 years on air on 2 April 2012. Gaeltacht
( , , ) are the districts of Ireland, individually or collectively, where the Irish government recognises that the Irish language is the predominant vernacular, or language of the home. The ''Gaeltacht'' districts were first officially recognised during the 1920s in the early years of the Irish Free State, following the Gaelic Revival, as part of a government policy aimed at restoring the Irish language. The Gaeltacht is threatened by serious language decline. Research published in 2015 showed that Irish is spoken on a daily basis by two-thirds or more of the population in only 21 of the 155 electoral divisions in the Gaeltacht. Donal McCann (7 May 1943 – 17 July 1999) was an Irish stage, film, and television actor best known for his roles in the works of Brian Friel and for his lead role in John Huston's last film, '' The Dead''. Cyril Cusack
Cyril James Cusack (26 November 1910 – 7 October 1993) was an Irish stage and screen actor with a career that spanned more than 70 years. During his lifetime, he was considered one of Ireland’s finest thespians, and was renowned for his interpretations of both classical and contemporary theatre, including Shakespearean roles as a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company, and over 60 productions for the Abbey Theatre, of which he was a lifelong member. ''PoitÃn'' is a 1978 Irish crime drama film produced and directed by Bob Quinn, and starring Cyril Cusack, Donal McCann, and Niall TóibÃn. It was the first feature film to be made entirely in Irish, and the first recipient of a film script grant from the Arts Council of Ireland. Plot Michil is a moonshiner in rural Connemara, living in an isolated cottage with his adult daughter. Two local degenerates, Labhrás and Sleamhnan, terrorize the old moonshiner for his contraband liquor (poitÃn, made from potatoes), threatening to kill him and rape his daughter, until the moonshiner outwits them and tricks them to their deaths. Bob Quinn (Irish Filmmaker)
Bob Quinn ( ga, Roibeard Ó Cuinn) (born Dublin, 1935) is an Irish filmmaker, writer and photographer who directed ''PoitÃn'' (1978), the first feature film entirely in the Irish language. His documentary work includes ''Atlantean'', a series of four documentaries about the origins of the Irish people. Quinn has a history of protesting the commercialisation of television, resigning from RTÉ in 1969 on that basis and resigning from the RTÉ Authority in 1999 to protest toy advertising. He received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Irish Film Institute in 2001 and is a member of the Aosdána. Early life and television career Quinn was born in Dublin in 1935. Lelia Doolan
Lelia Doolan (born 1934) is an Irish television producer. Doolan was born in Cork in 1934. She studied French and German at University College Dublin, where she won a scholarship to study at the Brecht Theatre in Germany. She presented and acted in shows on the newly established RTÉ in 1961 and starred in a short entertainment called "The Ballad Singer" produced by Tom McGrath (producer), Tom McGrath, a program preserved in the station's archives. She soon moved into a role as producer/director, after training in the United States. She was responsible for the establishment of ''The Riordans'' rural soap opera.
