''TG2'' (''TeleGiornale 2'') is the brand for the news programmes of Rai 2, the Italian state-owned television channel. The programmes are shown several times throughout the day — domestically on Rai 2, and across Europe, Africa, Americas, Asia and Australasia on Rai Italia. It was launched in 1961 as ''Telegiornale del Secondo Programma'' before adopting its current name on 15 March 1976. Editor and political leanings The editor-in-chief of the programmes is Nicola Rao. Rai 2 is an Italian free-to-air television channel owned and operated by state-owned public broadcaster RAI – Radiotelevisione italiana. It is the company's second television channel, and is known for broadcasting ''TG2'' news bulletins, talk shows, reality television, drama series, sitcoms and infotainment. In the 1980s it was known for its political affiliation to the Italian Socialist Party, it has shifted recently its focus towards the youth, including in its schedule reality shows, entertainment, TV series, news, knowledge and sports. RAI – Radiotelevisione italiana (; commercially styled as Rai since 2000; known until 1954 as Radio Audizioni Italiane) is the national public broadcasting company of Italy, owned by the Ministry of Economy and Finance. RAI operates many terrestrial and subscription television channels and radio stations. Andrea Barbato
Andrea Barbato (7 March 1934 – 12 February 1996) was an Italian journalist, politician, author, broadcaster, and screenwriter. Barbato was born in Rome. He started his career in journalism in 1956 working as a correspondent for the BBC. He also started writing for periodicals and newspapers, including ''L'espresso'' and '' Il Giorno'', in 1968 he was hired by RAI and worked as speaker for the twelve o'clock news edition at telegiornale. In 1971 he began working for '' La Stampa'' and was later appointed deputy editor of ''La Repubblica''. Between 1976 and 1980 he was the editor of TG2, and in 1982 he became the editor of the newspaper '. In 1983, Barbato was elected to the Chamber of Deputies with the Independent Left. In 1987 he started working for RAI 3 as a programme author and host. Barbato has also authored several books, stage dramas, and screenplays.
