T. A. Flynn
Terence A. Flynn (1858 – 8 July 1925) was an Irish people, Irish trade unionist. Born in Ireland, Flynn began working at the age of twelve. He completed an apprenticeship as a tailor, then moved to Scotland to find work, and later on to London. While in London, he joined the Amalgamated Society of Journeymen Tailors, and gradually rose to prominence, taking a leading role in the strike of 1891.''Annual Report of the 1925 Trades Union Congress'', p.350 He married the daughter of Peter Shorrocks, first General Secretary of the union.Anne J. Gurney Rowlerson
Gurney Rowlerson (10 July 1862 – 29 July 1944) was a British trade unionist. Rowlerson was born in Veryan, Cornwall, to wool agent George Walter Rowlerson and Catherine Isabella Rowlerson (''née'' Walker).''England, Select Births and Christenings, 1538-1975'' He worked as a tailor and became active in the Amalgamated Society of Tailors and Tailoresses (ASTT). The Amalgamated Society of Tailors and Tailoresses (AST&T) was a trade union representing tailors in the United Kingdom. The union was founded in 1866 when Peter Shorrocks convened a conference in Manchester of local societies of tailors. The conference was hugely successful, with 67 societies sending representatives, and 31 others sending messages giving their support to the formation of a national union. James MacDonald (trade Unionist)
James MacDonald (1857 – 21 May 1938) was a British trade unionist. Born in Edinburgh, MacDonald trained as a tailor and moved to London in 1881. He joined the Central Marylebone Democratic Association and the Manhood Suffrage League, but it was reading Friedrich Engels' articles in the ''Labour Standard'' that convinced him of socialism. As a result, he joined the Social Democratic Federation (SDF), but left in 1885 to join the Socialist Union. However, he rejoined the SDF in 1887. In 1888, MacDonald worked with Lewis Lyons to unite both East End and West End tailors, which became the Amalgamated Society of Tailors. He then founded a newspaper, ''Journeyman'', and joined the Independent Labour Party (ILP). In 1891, MacDonald was elected to the executive of the London Trades Council, and in 1896 he became its secretary, a post he held until 1913. Peter Shorrocks
Peter Shorrocks (8 April 1834 – 9 January 1886) was an early British trade union leader. Born in Manchester, Shorrocks attended the Oldham Blue Coat School before following his father into the tailoring trade. Influenced by Chartism in his youth, Shorrocks was always involved in trade union activity, and in 1860 he joined the recently founded Manchester Society of Journeymen Tailors.
