T.S.O.L. (True Sounds of Liberty) is an American punk rock band formed in 1978 in Huntington Beach, California. Although most commonly associated with hardcore punk, T.S.O.L.'s music has varied on each release, including such styles as deathrock, art punk, horror punk, other varieties of punk music, and hard rock. History 1978–1983: Formation and first releases Formed in 1978 in Huntington Beach, CA, T.S.O.L. originated as a punk band. While the band first used the name Vicious Circle, they eventually changed their name to T.S.O.L by September 1980. The original lineup consisted of vocalist Jack Grisham (who has been credited as Jack Greggors, Alex Morgon, Jack Ladoga, Jack Delauge and Jack Loyd, among pseudonyms), guitarist Ron Emory, bassist Mike Roche and drummer Todd Barnes. Jack Grisham
Jack Grisham (born July 22, 1961) is an American rock singer from Southern California. He is the vocalist for the punk rock band T.S.O.L. (True Sounds of Liberty), which emerged from the late 1970s Los Angeles hardcore punk rock scene, along with Black Flag, Circle Jerks and Bad Religion. Grisham has also fronted the bands Vicious Circle, the Joykiller, Tender Fury and Cathedral of Tears. He records with T.S.O.L., the Joykiller and the Manic Low. Biography Early life Jack Grisham was born in Long Beach, California. Grisham's father, a career military man with 30 years in the Navy and Coast Guard, died in 1984. Grisham's mother was a military housewife. Grisham was one of five children and has an older sister, two older brothers, and a younger sister. Beneath The Shadows
''Beneath the Shadows'' is the second studio album by the American hardcore punk band T.S.O.L. (True Sounds of Liberty), released in 1983 through Alternative Tentacles. With the addition of keyboardist Greg Kuehn to the lineup, the band moved away from punk rock in favor of a gothic rock sound in the vein of later releases by the Damned and Siouxsie and the Banshees, alienating much of their hardcore audience in the process. Though the album was critically well received and led to the band being featured in director Penelope Spheeris' film ''Suburbia'', it was largely rejected by their fanbase within the punk scene. By the end of the year founding members Jack Grisham and Todd Barnes had left the group. They were respectively replaced by singer Joe Wood and drummer Mitch Dean, with whom T.S.O.L. would continue further from punk rock, eventually becoming a glam rock outfit. ''Weathered Statues'' is an EP by the American hardcore punk band T.S.O.L. (True Sounds of Liberty), released in 1982 through Alternative Tentacles. In comparison to the band's previous material, its experimental nature and melodic leanings confused some of their fans and presaged the creative direction they would take on their second studio album, 1983's '' Beneath the Shadows''. The material from ''Weathered Statues'' was later re-released on the compilation albums '' Thoughts of Yesterday: 1981–1982'' (1987) and ''T.S.O.L. / Weathered Statues'' (1997). Ron Emory
Ronald Emory (born May 20, 1962, Lynwood, California, United States) is an American rock musician and guitarist for the punk rock band T.S.O.L. (True Sounds of Liberty). An original member of the band, founded in Southern California in 1979, Emory left in 1987 prior to the release of the album ''Hit and Run''. In 1996, he joined the other original members of T.S.O.L. to reform the band, which remains active. Emory worked on a solo project titled ''Walk That Walk'', which was released on April 15, 2010. Emory played with Social Distortion during their 2006 tour to fill in for his friend Mike Ness, who had broken his wrist in a skateboarding accident. Joe Wood (musician)
Joe Wood is an American singer/songwriter, best known as the singer for T.S.O.L. from 1983 to 1993. Career Der Stab, The Hated, The Loners After seeing The Germs at the Masque, Wood formed his own band, Der Stab for which he played for about six to eight months, he would later play bass in The Hated, and later formed The Loners, a blues rockabilly band. True Sounds of Liberty (T.S.O.L.) Greg Kuehn
Gregory Russell Kuehn is an American composer, songwriter, musician and producer. Career As a performing musician Kuehn's career began in Orange County's early punk scene, when he left his classical piano studies at California State University, Long Beach to join horror punk icons T.S.O.L. Together they made the album '' Beneath the Shadows'', still a highly regarded and influential work. Following his tenure in T.S.O.L., he spent several years as a recording and touring musician working with artists including Bob Dylan, The Church, Duane Peters, Megan Mullally, Berlin and Ian Astbury of The Cult. Most recently, Kuehn has been performing with LA punk legends X, filling in for the late Ray Manzarek of The Doors. Frontier Records is an independent record label, started in 1980 in Sun Valley, Los Angeles by Lisa Fancher, a former employee of BOMP! Records and writer of the liner notes for the first album by The Runaways. History Frontier Records first found success with the release of the Circle Jerks album ''Group Sex''. The label went on to put out records by such bands as Suicidal Tendencies, American Music Club, Heatmiser, Redd Kross, Thin White Rope, T.S.O.L., Christian Death, and the Young Fresh Fellows, among others. Posh Boy Records is a Hollywood, California-based record label owned by the American-born, British-educated Robbie "Posh Boy" Fields, a sometime high school substitute teacher and former copy boy at the ''Los Angeles Times'' who took an interest in the emerging punk rock scene in Orange County, California during the late 1970s. The label's releases enjoyed substantial airplay on Rodney Bingenheimer's show on KROQ-FM, and some of them, notably the Fields-produced version of "Amoeba" by the Adolescents and the Stephen Hague-produced electronic rock track "Are You Ready for the Sex Girls" by the Sparks offshoot the Gleaming Spires, made it into regular programming on the station. Jay Bentley
Jayson Dee Bentley (born June 6, 1964) is the bassist and co-founding member of the punk rock group Bad Religion. He has played with the band through its whole existence with a small break between 1983 and 1985. Along with vocalist Greg Graffin, Bentley has appeared on nearly all of Bad Religion's studio albums, with the sole exception being their second album '' Into the Unknown'' (1983).
