T.G. Smith Centre
The T.G. Smith Centre is an ice hockey complex in Steinbach, Manitoba, Canada. It features two indoor arenas and one outdoor ice rink. History The original part of the complex, the ''Steinbach Centennial Arena'', opened in 1967 and accommodates up to 1,250 spectators (seated and standing room combined). A second indoor rink was constructed in the mid-1990s after which the entire complex was named after the late T.G. Smith, a local banker and supporter of local sport programs. The newer of the two indoor rinks, the ''T.G. Smith Arena'', has a capacity of approximately 300. The T.G. Smith Centre has been the home of the Steinbach Pistons of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League since 2009. Steinbach () ( Plautdietsch: /ˈʃte̞nbah/ or /ˈʃte̞nbax/) is a city located about south-east of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Steinbach is the third-largest city in Manitoba, with a population of 17,806, and the largest community in the Eastman region. Ringette
Ringette is a non-contact winter team sport played on ice hockey rinks using ice hockey skates, straight sticks with drag-tips, and a blue, rubber, pneumatic ring designed for use on ice surfaces. The sport is among a small number of organized team sports created exclusively for female competitors. Though ice hockey rinks are used, ringette rinks use markings specific to ringette and the sport uses strategic play which more closely resembles basketball than ice hockey. The sport was created in Canada for girls in 1963 by Sam Jacks from West Ferris, Ontario and Red McCarthy from Espanola, Ontario. In 2018, over 50,000 players registered to play the sport. Ringette is played predominantly in Canada and Finland with both countries forming the sport's top international teams on a regular basis. 2002 Air Canada Cup
The 2002 Air Canada Cup was Canada's 24th annual national midget 'AAA' hockey championship, played April 22–28, 2002 at the K. C. Irving Regional Centre in Bathurst, New Brunswick. The Tisdale Trojans from Saskatchewan defeated the Dartmouth Subways from Nova Scotia 6-2 in the gold medal game to win the national title. This season's Air Canada Cup gained extra attention from media and hockey scouts as 14-year-old prodigy Sidney Crosby competed as a member of the Dartmouth Subways. He led them to a berth in the championship game, the first time that a team from Atlantic Canada had ever advanced to the gold medal game. Crosby led the round robin in scoring with 18 points in five games and was named the Most Valuable Player. Steinbach Curling Club
The Steinbach Curling Club is located in Steinbach, Manitoba, Canada. The curling club began in 1948 and was incorporated in 1963. Its current building opened in October 2014 is located adjacent to the T.G. Smith Centre. The new five-sheet rink replaced the old four-sheet rink located across the street. World U-17 Hockey Challenge
The World U-17 Hockey Challenge, originally known as the Quebec Esso Cup, is an international ice hockey tournament held annually in Canada. Prior to 2011, the tournament did not operate during years in which the Canada Winter Games were held. As such, the World Under-17 Challenge was held three out of every four years. It is organized by Hockey Canada and is the first major international competition for male hockey players under the age of 17. The tournament is the first step in Hockey Canada's Program of Excellence and is used to identify players moving on to the U18 and National Junior Team. 2016 Allan Cup
The 2016 Allan Cup was the Canadian championship of senior ice hockey and the 108th year the Allan Cup was awarded. The tournament was contended in Steinbach, Manitoba from April 11 to April 16, 2016, with all games played at the T.G. Smith Centre. The Bentley Generals defeated the host and defending champion South East Prairie Thunder in overtime to win the national title.
