Syro-Malabar Catholic Eparchy Of Mississauga
The Syro-Malabar Catholic Eparchy of Mississauga is an eparchy for all Syro-Malabar Catholics in Canada. It comprises 53 parishes which includes both churches and missions, with churches or missions in most provinces of Canada. It is currently the largest diocese in the world by area, stretching from the east coast of Canada all the way through the prairies and to the west coast, covering the whole of Canada. History The immigration of Syro-Malabars to Canada began in the 1960s. As the immigrant population grew, there began a need for pastoral care. The faithful then began to bring Syro-Malabar priests into Canada. The faithful attended Qurbana in various places such as churches or cafeterias/gymnasiums etc. Later, The Apostolic Exarchate for the Syro-Malabar faithful in Canada was formally erected by Pope Francis on August 6, 2015, the Transfiguration of the Lord, through the Apostolic Constitution “Spiritualem ubertatem” with its see in Mississauga. The Eparchy of St. Thomas Syro-Malabar Catholic of Chicago, also known as the St. Thomas Syro-Malabar Diocese of Chicago, is a Syro-Malabar Catholic Church ecclesiastical territory or eparchy of the Catholic Church in the United States. Its episcopal seat is the Mar Thoma Sleeha Cathedral in the episcopal see of Chicago in Illinois state. The Most Reverend Mar Joy Alappat is the current bishop of the Eparchy since October 2022. While Mar Jacob Angadiath served as the bishop since the Eparchy's establishment in 2001 until his retirement in July 2022. It is not part of any ecclesiastical province, but immediately subject to the Holy See and depends on the Dicastery for the Oriental Churches. Eparchy ( gr, ἐπαρχία, la, eparchía / ''overlordship'') is an ecclesiastical unit in Eastern Christianity, that is equivalent to a diocese in Western Christianity. Eparchy is governed by an ''eparch'', who is a bishop. Depending on the administrative structure of a specific Eastern Church, eparchy can belong to an ecclesiastical province (usually a metropolis), but it can also be exempt. Each eparchy is divided into parishes, in the same manner as a diocese in Western Churches. Mar Jacob Angadiath (born September 26, 1945) is an Indian prelate of the Catholic Church; he was serving as the first bishop of the St. Thomas Syro-Malabar Catholic Diocese of Chicago from July 2001 until his retirement on July 3, 2022. Biography Angadiath was born on October 26, 1945, at Periappuram in the princely state of Cochin (modern day Ernakulam District, Kerala) in India. He was sent to Dallas, Texas, in 1984 under the auspices of the Overseas Mission of the Syro-Malabar Church to initiate a Syro-Malabar ministry in the United States. George Alencherry ( syr, ܡܵܪܝ ܓܝܼܘܲܪܓܝܼܣ ܐܵܠܲܢܫܝܪܝ, Mar Giwargis Alencherry) is the Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church and also a cardinal of the Catholic Church. He was elected by the Holy Synod of the Syro-Malabar Church in 2011 to succeed Varkey Vithayathil (1999–2011). He was created a cardinal on 18 February 2012 by Pope Benedict XVI. He was the first bishop of Thuckalay from 1997 to 2011 before his enthronement as the major archbishop.
