Farid Uddin Chowdhury ( bn, ফরিদ উদ্দিন চৌধুরী; born 25 December 1947) is a teacher, politician and businessman. He was the former Member of Parliament for the Sylhet-5 constituency from 2001 to 2008, representing the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami party. Early life and education Chowdhury was born on 25 December 1947 into a Bengali Muslim family in Talbari village, Kanaighat, Sylhet District in East Bengal. His father, Abdul Haq Chowdhury, was a Mawlana. Chowdhury completed his secondary education (dakhil) at the Sylhet Government Alia Madrasah in 1959. He remained in the madrasa where he finished his ''alim'' course in 1963, ''fazil'' in 1965 and ''Kamil'' degree by 1967. He then moved on to study at the Murari Chand College, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts in Bengali language in 1971. Obaidul Haque ( bn, ওবায়দুল হক) was a politician, teacher and the former Member of Parliament of Sylhet-5. Early life and education Haque was born on 2 January 1934 into a Bengali Muslim in the village of Wazirpur in Kholachhora Union, Zakiganj, Sylhet District, Bangladesh. He completed his primary education locally, before enrolling as a student at the Dubag Junior High School up until class 8. He then studied at the Ranaping Arabia Hussainia Madrasa in Dhakauttar, Golapganj. After that, he studied at the Ashraful Uloom Madrasa in Bara Katara, Dhaka. Salim Uddin ( bn, সেলিম উদ্দিন) is a Bangladeshi politician and the incumbent Member of Parliament from Sylhet-5. Early life Salim Uddin was born on 6 April 1960 in Nalbahar village of Tilpara Union in Beanibazar Upazila of Sylhet district of then East Pakistan. 2018 Bangladeshi General Election
General elections were held in Bangladesh on 30 December 2018 to elect 300 directly-elected members of the Jatiya Sangsad. The result was a landslide victory for the Awami League led by Sheikh Hasina. According to political scientist Ali Riaz, the elections were not free and fair. Kanaighat Upazila
Kanaighat ( bn, কানাইঘাট) is an upazila of Sylhet Division of Bangladesh. It is the second-largest upazila (sub-district) of Sylhet District after Gowainghat Upazila. It is named after the town of Kanaighat, which is also the only municipality in the Upazila. Etymology There are two theories regarding the naming of Kanaighat. The word ghat in the Bengali language refers to a flight of steps leading down to a river. The Kanaighat Bazar, which the Kanaighat Upazila is named after, sits on the banks of the Surma River.
