Sydenham Institute Of Management Studies, Research And Entrepreneurship Education
Sydenham Institute of Management Studies, Research and Entrepreneurship Education (SIMSREE) is one of the top management institutes in India under the aegis of the University of Mumbai. It was named after the then-governor of Bombay, Lord Sydenham of Combe in 1913. He was an early propoent in the spread of commerce-based vocational courses in India. Thus, Sydenham College became the oldest degree awarding institution in commerce. SIMSREE was established in 1983. K.S.Aiyar acted as first honorary principal of college. It was only in 1941, twenty-eight years after the establishment of Sydenham college, that any other institutions started offering courses in the subject. Until the 18th century, Bombay consisted of seven islands separated by shallow sea. These seven islands were part of a larger archipelago in the Arabian sea, off the western coast of India. The date of city's founding is unclear—historians trace back urban settlement to the late 17th century after the British secured the seven islands from the Portuguese to establish a secure base in the region. George Sydenham Clarke, 1st Baron Sydenham of Combe, (4 July 1848 – 7 February 1933) was a British Army officer and colonial administrator. He later wrote antisemitic and racist pamphlets for the British far right, as well as at least one novel in 1891. Biography Background and education Clarke was born in Lincolnshire, and educated at Haileybury, Wimbledon and the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich. Military career Clarke entered the Royal Engineers in 1868, served in the Egyptian Expedition and as Assistant Political officer during the following Sudan expedition.
