Swinford GAA
Swinford GAA ( ga, C.L.G. Beal Atha Na Muice) is a Gaelic Athletic Association club based in Swinford, County Mayo. They play in Mayo Intermediate Football Championship and belong to the East Division. History Originally there were three clubs in Swinford area, "The Commercials", "The Sextons" and then also "The Young Ireland". There is no evidence about the foundation of a unique club, but Swinford contested the Mayo final, the first and only one, in 1889, when they lost against Ballina Stephenites GAA. The club has never won a major football trophy, neither a county title. They won a Mayo hurling trophy in 1956. Swinford has been more successful with minor teams, collecting a Junior Final in 1949 and a Minor Title in 1951. Robert McCallion Memorial Park
Robert McCallion Memorial Park is a Gaelic football venue in Swinford, County Mayo. The home of Swinford GAA, it is named in honour of club member Robbie McCallion. It was rededicated in honour of McCallion in 2012, following on from his death three years earlier. Swinford, County Mayo
Swinford () is a town in County Mayo, Ireland. It is surrounded by a number of smaller villages, including Midfield and Meelick. It is just off the N5 road, located 18 km (11 mi) from Ireland West Airport Knock (formerly known as Knock International Airport). Situated on a tributary of the River Moy, Swinford is known for its fishing waters, including the Callow lakes and the lakes of Conn and Cullin. Swinford was bypassed in 1993 by the N5 route and was the first town in Mayo to be bypassed. Etymology The origins of the name "Swinford" are disputed. The Mayo Intermediate Football Championship is an annual Gaelic football competition contested by mid-tier (17-32) Mayo GAA clubs. Ballyhaunis are the title holders (2022) defeating Kilmeena in the Final. Honours The winning club competes in the Connacht Intermediate Club Football Championship. They often do well there, with the likes of Westport (2016), Hollymount Carraroe (2015), Kiltane (2013) and Charlestown Sarsfields (2012) among the clubs from Mayo to win at least one Connacht Championship after winning the Mayo Intermediate Football Championship. Ballina Stephenites is a Gaelic Athletic Association club based in the Ballina, County Mayo, Ballina area in County Mayo, Republic of Ireland, Ireland. They are the most successful club in Mayo and fourth most successful in Ireland based on trophy amount. History The Ballina Stephenites Club was founded on the 28th (last Saturday) of August 1886 by James Wallace Melvin. (Pen-name Larry Doolan) who also penned the Club's rallying song-"Forward to the goal of victory" The first meeting was held in "Barney's Boreen" at the top of Convent Hill. The Mayo Senior Hurling Championship is an annual hurling competition contested since 1923 by the top Mayo GAA clubs. Tooreen are the current (2022) title holders, defeating Ballyhaunis in the final. Presently the competition has four teams: Tooreen, Ballyhaunis, Castlebar & Westport. Ballina and Belmullet no longer compete. Honours The trophy presented to the winners is the TJ Tyrrell Cup. Honours The trophy presented to the winners is the McDonnell Cup. The winners of the Mayo Junior Championship qualify to represent their county in the Connacht Junior Club Football Championship.
