London Aquatics Centre
The London Aquatics Centre is an indoor facility with two swimming pools and a diving pool in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford, London. The centre, designed by architect Zaha Hadid as one of the main venues of the 2012 Summer Olympics and the 2012 Summer Paralympics, was used for the swimming, diving and synchronised swimming events. After significant modification, the centre opened to the public in March 2014. Design The centre was designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Zaha Hadid in 2004 before London won the bid for the 2012 Summer Olympics. It was built alongside the Water Polo Arena and opposite the Olympic Stadium on the opposite bank of the Waterworks River. The site is high, long, and wide. Summer Ashley Mortimer (born April 22, 1993) is a Canadian-Dutch former paraswimmer who competed internationally for Canada, and later the Netherlands national paralympic team, an artist, a performing artist, and CBC Sports personality. Mortimer won seven world-championship finals for Canada and the Netherlands, and four medals for Canada at her first Paralympic Games in London: two gold, one silver and one bronze. Mortimer competed in the 2008 Canadian Olympic Trials as an able-bodied swimmer, and retrained as a paraswimmer after a trampolining accident. She began competing at the international level in 2010 with an SM10 classification, setting world records in the process (one of which she broke again in qualifying for the 2012 Paralympics). Brianna Nelson (born 9 May 1992) is a S7 classified Canadian para-swimmer who has competed in the 2008 and 2012 Paralympics. She was introduced to swimming by her cycling coach and had won two silver medals and one gold in the Paralympics and the IPC Swimming World Championships. She currently attends the University of Victoria. Personal life Nelson was born on 9 May 1992 in Calgary, Alberta. She resides in Victoria, British Columbia. Katarina Mirabelle Roxon (born April 5, 1993) is a Canadian Paralympic swimmer from Canada. In 2016 she won a gold medal in the 100 metre breaststroke at the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro and was the only representative of Canada there in S9, SB8 and SM9 disability classifications. She won a bronze medal at the 2020 Summer Paralympics, in Women's 34pts 4x100m relay. Career Roxon finished on top in the 100-metre breaststroke finals.
