Swimming At The 2008 Summer Olympics – Women's 100 Metre Freestyle
The women's 100 metre freestyle event at the 2008 Olympic Games took place on 13–15 August at the Beijing National Aquatics Center in Beijing, China. Germany's Britta Steffen blasted a new Olympic record to claim a gold medal in the event. Coming from eighth place in the turn, she posted a time of 53.12 to edge out Australia's world record holder and top favorite Lisbeth Trickett by 0.04 of a second. Swimming in lane eight, Trickett earned a silver with an outside record time of 53.16. She narrowly reached the final as the eighth seed, when China's Pang Jiaying was disqualified for a false start in the semifinals. Meanwhile, U.S. swimmer Natalie Coughlin powered home with a bronze in a matching American record of 53.39 for the second consecutive Olympics. Beijing National Aquatics Center
The National Aquatics Centre (), and colloquially known as the Water Cube () and the Ice Cube (), is an aquatics center at the Olympic Green in Beijing, China. The facility was originally constructed to host the aquatics competitions at the 2008 Summer Olympics and Paralympics. During the Olympics — where it hosted diving, swimming and synchronized swimming events — 25 world records were broken in swimming. Francesca Jean Halsall (born 12 April 1990) is a retired English competitive swimmer who has represented Great Britain at the Olympics, FINA world championships, and European championships, and England at the Commonwealth Games. She competed primarily in freestyle and butterfly events. Halsall was the youngest member of the Team England swim squad at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, where she won silver medals in the 4×100-metre freestyle and 4×100-metre medley relays. She was a member of the European Aquatics Championships 4×100-metre medley relay team that took gold in August 2006 and successfully defended their title in August 2008 in Eindhoven. Erica Rachelle Morningstar (born March 3, 1989) is a Canadian swimmer who has competed in international events including the 2008 Summer Olympics, and 2012 Summer Olympics. Early life Morningstar was born in Regina, Saskatchewan. She began swimming at the age of 9. Initially she was unsure about the sport and her parents had to give her a small push to join a competitive club. She joined the Calgary Patriots and continued to swim with them until the 2008 Olympic Games, when afterwards she joined the University of Calgary Varsity Swim Team. 2006 Commonwealth Games The 2006 Commonwealth Games, held in Melbourne, Australia, were Morningstar's debut on the Canadian national team. Lacey Pearl Nymeyer (born October 29, 1985) is an American former competition swimmer, Olympic medalist, and former world record-holder. Personal Nymeyer is a Tucson native who graduated in 2004 from Mountain View High School. She is also a graduate of the University of Arizona where she majored in physical education. Away from her own training, Nymeyer leads swim clinics and speaks to youth groups. She is also a substitute teacher and plans to teach full-time when her swimming career ends.
