The women's 100 metre breaststroke event at the 2004 Olympic Games was contested at the Olympic Aquatic Centre of the Athens Olympic Sports Complex in Athens, Greece on August 15 and 16. Chinese swimmer and triple world champion Luo Xuejuan won the gold medal in this event, with an Olympic record time of 1:06.64, missing the world record by 0.27 of a second. Athens Olympic Aquatic Centre
The Athens Olympic Aquatic Centre is a complex at the Athens Olympic Sports Complex, consisting of two outdoor pools and one indoor pool, that was built for the 1991 Mediterranean Games. It was refurbished and expanded for the 2004 Summer Olympics. The larger of the outdoor pools, which seats 11,500 spectators, hosted Swimming at the 2004 Summer Olympics, swimming and Water Polo at the 2004 Summer Olympics, water polo events. The smaller pool, which hosted Synchronized Swimming at the 2004 Summer Olympics, synchronized swimming, sat 5,300 fans. The indoor pool, which hosted the Diving at the 2004 Summer Olympics, diving events, sat 6,200 observers. It is used for swimming, too. Lauren Van Oosten
Lauren van Oosten (born November 17, 1978) is a Canadian competition swimmer and a breaststroke specialist. Biography She is originally from Nanaimo, British Columbia and is of Dutch heritage. She grew up and learned to swim in Nanaimo, before moving to the national training centre at the University of Calgary in Calgary, Alberta. Lauren has been an integral part of the National Swim Team since 1997. Since then she has won a total of 9 international medals (bronze, silver and gold) and has set two Canadian records, one (200 m breaststroke) that still stands and one (100 m breaststroke) that lasted for six years (1998–2004). She attributes much of her success to her coach, Jan Bidrman. Her first international meet was the Pan Pacific Swimming Championships in Fukuoka, Japan in August 1997. Vipa Bernhardt
Vipa Bernhardt (born 20 September 1982) is a German former competitive swimmer who specialized in breaststroke events. She was a member of the swimming team for Schwimmgemeinschaft Frankfurt. Bernhardt was also a college swimmer for the Florida Gators swimming and diving team under head coach Gregg Troy at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida. Bernhardt qualified for the women's 100-meter breaststroke at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece, by attaining an A-standard entry time of 1:09.04 at the German Olympic trials. Ágnes Kovács (born 13 July 1981) is a Hungarian swimmer who competed at the Hungary at the 1996 Summer Olympics, 1996, Hungary at the 2000 Summer Olympics, 2000 and Hungary at the 2004 Summer Olympics, 2004 Olympics. In Swimming at the 2000 Summer Olympics, 2000, she won the 200 m breaststroke and set the List of Hungarian records in swimming, Hungary records in the 100 m and 200 m breaststrokes events (1:07.79 and 2:24.03). Rhiannon Leier (born May 30, 1977) is a Canadian former competition swimmer who specialized in breaststroke events. She is a multiple-time Canadian record holder, a two-time finalist at the FINA World Championships (2001 and 2003), and a six-time NCAA All-American honoree. She also won a bronze medal, as a member of the Canadian swimming team, in the women's 4x100-metre medley relay at the 2002 Pan Pacific Swimming Championships in Yokohama, Japan, clocking at 4:05.59. Svitlana Bondarenko ( uk, Світлана Бондаренко; born 12 August 1971 in Zaporizhzhia) is a former international breaststroke swimmer from Ukraine. She swam at three Olympics (1996, 2000 and 2004), multiple World Championships and European Championships, and several other meets during her international career from 1991 to 2010. QI Hui (齐晖, born 13 January 1985 in Fuzhou, Fujian) is an Olympic and former world record holding breaststroke swimmer from China. Sarah Poewe (born 3 March 1983) is an Olympic breaststroke swimmer who has competed internationally for both South Africa and Germany. Poewe was born in Cape Town, South Africa, the daughter of Lorrain (née Stoch) and Reinhardt Poewe. She lives in Wuppertal, Germany. Her mother is from a Jewish family in South Africa, and her father is German. At the age of 14, she made her international debut at the 1997 Pan Pacific Championships.
