Sweet Home, Oregon
Sweet Home is a city in Linn County, Oregon, United States, with population 8,925 at the 2010 census. Built near the site of a prehistoric petrified forest, Sweet Home experienced substantial growth during the construction of the Green Peter and Foster dams in the 1940s. The town's main attraction nowadays is the Cascade mountains through Santiam pass. History Settlers first arrived in the Sweet Home Valley in the early 1850s. A community known as Buckhead developed near the mouth of Ames Creek and the South Santiam River. Buckhead was named after a saloon that featured a set of elk antlers on the gable end of its building. East of Buckhead, a community called Mossville developed with a store and post office. In 1874, the two communities merged to become one community called Sweet Home. In 1893, the city of Sweet Home was incorporated. Primary use of the reservoir is recreation in the summer and flood control in the winter and spring. Recreation Lewis Creek Park is a recreation area located on the north shore of the reservoir. The park includes a roped-off swim beach, picnic areas, barbecues, paved trails, lake accessibility for shoreline fishing and boat moorage. The park is operated by the Linn County Parks Department. Sunnyside Campground is a park located on the eastern edge of Foster Reservoir. The park has 165 campsites including 132 campsites with electrical/water hook-ups, a dump station and restroom/shower facilities. Oregon Jamboree
The Oregon Jamboree is a three-day country music and camping festival held in Sweet Home, Oregon, United States. The event was founded in 1992 as an economic development project for the Sweet Home community. In addition to funding economic development activities, profits from the festival help support community humanitarian projects. The festival site is located on a large field south of Sweet Home High School. The venue extends across the Weddle Covered Bridge to Sankey Park. Recent attendance has exceeded 13,000 people per day. Santiam Wagon Road
The Santiam Wagon Road was a freight route in the U.S. state of Oregon between the Willamette Valley and Central Oregon regions from 1865 to the 1930s. It is considered one of the most important historical routes in the state. Officially known as the Willamette Valley and Cascade Mountain Wagon Road, the Santiam Wagon Road was built between 1861 and 1868 and operated as a toll road until 1915. South Santiam River
The South Santiam River is a tributary of the Santiam River, about long, in western Oregon in the United States. It drains an area of the Cascade Range into the Willamette Valley east of Corvallis. It rises in the Cascades in southeastern Linn County in the Willamette National Forest at .
