The Swedish Saw Mill Industry Workers Union ( sv, Svenska sågverksindustriarbetarförbundet, abbreviated SSIAF) was a trade union of saw mill workers in Sweden. Norrland (, "Northland", originally ''Norrlanden'' or "the Northlands") is the northernmost, largest and least populated of the three traditional lands of Sweden, consisting of nine provinces. Although Norrland does not serve any administrative purposes, it continues to exist as a historical, cultural, and geographic region; it is often referred to in everyday language, e.g., in weather forecasts. Gävle
Gävle () is a city in Sweden, the seat of Gävle Municipality and the capital of Gävleborg County. It had 77,586 inhabitants in 2020, which makes it the 13th most populated city in Sweden. It is the oldest city in the historical Norrland (Sweden's Northern Lands), having received its charter in 1446 from Christopher of Bavaria. However, Gävle is far nearer to the greater Stockholm region than it is to most other major settlements in Norrland and has a much milder climate than associated with said region. In recent years, the city has received much international attention due to its large Yule Goat figure made of straw - the Gävle Goat. The Swedish Trade Union Confederation ( sv, Landsorganisationen i Sverige ; literally "National Organisation in Sweden"), commonly referred to as LO (), is a national trade union centre, an umbrella organisation for fourteen Swedish trade unions that organise mainly "blue-collar" workers. Swedish General Strike
The Swedish general strike ( sv, Storstrejken) of August 4 to September 4, 1909, was a general work stoppage by over 300,000 individuals all over Sweden. It was the first major conflict between the Swedish Trade Union Confederation (), and the Swedish Employers Association (). The losses to employers was estimated to be around 25 million Swedish kronor. Recession was having a negative impact on many companies and the SAF therefore wanted to lower wages. A lockout of 80,000 workers in the textile-, sawmill- and pulp industry was put in effect. The LO answered with a call for general strike. Only healthcare workers and a few other skeleton professions were exempt from the strike. Funds were short and forced the union to end the strike after a month, resulting in major membership losses. August Lindberg (6 September 1885, Älvkarleby, Uppsala County – 15 July 1966, Stockholm) was a Swedish trade union organizer. He was a sawmill worker by profession, and belonged to the Swedish Saw Mill Industry Workers Union (Swedish: ''Svenska sågverksindustriarbetarförbundet'', SSIAF). The Swedish Wood Industry Workers' Union ( sv, Svenska Träindustriarbetareförbundet, STIAF or Trä) was a trade union representing wood workers in Sweden. The union was founded on 1 January 1924, when the Swedish Wood Workers' Union was split in two. Like its predecessor, it affiliated to the Swedish Trade Union Confederation. By the end of 1924, it had 8,920 members, and it grew steadily.
