Swedish Hip Hop
Emerging in the first half of the 1980s, Swedish hip hop originated in the cities of Stockholm and Malmö. Early on, most rappers in Sweden performed in English. Funkalics and The Latin Kings, two very different acts united by their innovative use of the Swedish language, debuted a decade later and paved the way for a second, and bigger, breakthrough for Swedish hip hop. Today, some of the most popular rappers use Swedish, often in different accents. History Origins Percussionist Per Cussion (of reggae-punk band Dag Vag) and Grandmaster Funk are generally credited with bringing hip hop to Sweden. In 1984 they released the songs "Don't Stop", "Snow Blind" and "Payin´ The Price". Breakdancing had arrived a year earlier and spread quickly, its forerunners known as Robot Lasse, Mark, Spirio and Perkeles. Hov1
Hov1 (pronounced Hovet) are a Swedish hip hop group formed in 2015 signed to EMI Sweden / Universal Music Sweden. The group has released four studio albums; ''Hov1'', ''Gudarna på Västerbron'', ''Vindar på Mars'', '' Barn av vår tid'', and one mixtape '' Montague''. They all charted atop the Swedish Albums Chart. The group have had 26 top 10 hits on the Swedish Singles Chart, with 12 of them reaching the top spot. Medina (group)
Medina is a Swedish hip hop duo formation with Arabic influences made up of Swedish artists of Tunisian descent, being Sam-E (born Sami Daniel Rekik), a former professional football player in Tunisia and Alibi (born Ali Jammali). Sam-E is also of Finnish descent as his mother is Finnish. Career The two started making music in 2003 under the name Medina after they met in Knivsta promoting a special genre they called "Haffla music" with rhythm from the Arab World mixed with hip hop. Their debut release was mixtape/album ''Rumble in Fiskayyet'' and the resulting single "Magdansös". They followed up with a series of albums, ''Fullblod'', ''7 dar'', ''Mosh Normal'', ''Hayat'' and ''Sista Minuten''. Linda Pira
Linda Marie Pira Giraldo, (born 25 August 1985) is a Swedish rapper. She grew up in Hässelby in western Stockholm where she still resides. Her parents, Kjell, a bar owner and Zulima lived in Colombia. After Linda was born, they all moved to Sweden. Linda Pira went to high school at Fryshuset, where she studied music with artists such as Lykke Li, Näääk and Sebastian Stakset. Pira was featured on rapper Stor's single "Rom och Kush" in the fall of 2012. During the summer of 2013, she released the double single "Bang Bang" / "Bäng Bäng". The Salazar Brothers produced her first EP ''Matriarken'' in late 2013. The EP was released under Redline Records label. Lazee
Mawuli Kulego (better known by his stage name Lazee) is a Swedish rapper from the Malmö suburb Lindängen. Biography Lazee was born in Malmö, Sweden, to parents of Ghanaian origin. His passion for music grew at a young age and he was heavily influenced by the musical tastes of his father who was a DJ. He introduced Lazee to soul, R&B and reggae. Lazee first became interested in Hip Hop when he was seven years old and wrote his first rhyme at the age of ten. Just before 13th birthday his mother sent him to England where she believed he could "be someone". He attended Elliott School in Putney, Greater London. Labyrint (band)
Labyrint formed in 2007 was a Swedish hip hop music group from Gottsunda, Uppsala. After performing for a number of years together, in 2007, they had a breakthrough with "Vår Betong" and in 2009 collaborated with Masse from The Salazar Brothers to release a mixtape that became popular through downloads on Whoa.se website. Based on these successes, Universal Records expressed interest signing them to the label in 2011. However their launch was marred by Växjö cancelling their show after advice from the security authorities about the controversial use of cannabis during their gigs. This turned into a public debate in the media about drugs in hip hop culture. Labyrint's debut studio album on the label was ''Labababa'' that was released on 30 November 2011 in the wake of the controversy. It included collaborations with Kapten Röd and Gregor.

Kumba (Swedish Rapper)
Kumba M'bye, (born 5 February 1983) is a Swedish rap artist and former model. Early life Kumba grew up in Malmö and Landskrona. Career In the early 2000s she started rapping and writing lyrics in English. During the summer of 2013 the rapper Stor heard her rapping and invited her to do an audition at the record label Redline Records. Inspired by the rappers Linda Pira and Lilla Namo she started writing lyrics in Swedish. In 2014, she collaborated with Pira on her music single "Knäpper mina fingrar". This led to Kumba being able to participate in a hiphop concert at the Dramaten for female rappers only. She has also participated in the Sveriges Radio show "En kärleksattack på svensk hiphop". In 2014, her music single "I staden" was released for Redline Records. At the 2015 Kingsize gala she was nominated for Best Newcomer of 2015. Ken Ring (rapper)
Ken Ring (born January 29, 1979) is a Swedish rap artist. Career He was born in Hässelby, a suburb west of Stockholm, Sweden. Ken wrote the song "Mamma" about his mother becoming ill and dying of cancer when he was 13 years old; it was his breakthrough song, released in 1999. He released his first studio album later that year, entitled ''Vägen tillbaka'', with the hit single "Eld och djupa vatten". After a show on "Vattenfestivalen" in Stockholm later in 1999, Ken Ring got arrested for performing the song called "Spräng regeringen" in which he rapped about rushing the Royal Palace in Stockholm and raping Princess Madeleine. Because of this controversy Ken's record label ended their cooperation with the rapper, in the year 2000, however, before parting ways, Ken managed to release his second studio album ''Mitt hem blir ditt hem'', through the same label. Kartellen
Kartellen (English: ''The Cartel'') was a Swedish gangsta rap hip hop group founded in 2008 by Kinesen and Babyface, who are both serving life sentences in Finland for accessory to murder. Kinesen was also allegedly involved in an infamous airport multi-million robbery in 2002. The band used the materials sent by Kinesen with Babyface and others in prison and released them for downloads. It was fronted by Sebbe Staxx (real name Sebastian Stakset), Kaka, Maskinisten. Other members joining later included Lil' Star and Lani Mo Cribbe. Established musicians and producers also contributed to the effort. Kartellen has been a famous and provocative hip hop act portraying crime and social problems in the suburbs in their albums and mixtapes.
