Swanton Abbott is a village and civil parish in the district of North Norfolk. It has an area of and a population of 565 at the 2011 Census (including Westwick). The village lies south of North Walsham, south of the seaside town of Cromer and north by road from the centre of the city of Norwich, Norfolk's administrative centre. The villages name means 'Herdsmen's farm/settlement'. The village was granted to the Abbot of St. Benet Holme by King Cnut. Amenities It is served by St Michael's church in the ecclesiastical parish of Worstead. A Wesleyan Reform Union Chapel opened in 1856. Swanton Abbott Community Primary School is a co-educational school for children from 4–11 years. There were two public houses in the village, the Jolly Farmers and the Weavers Arms. Swanton Morley is a village and civil parish situated in the English county of Norfolk. It is situated in the heart of Norfolk 18 miles from the centre of Norwich and three miles from Dereham, at the geographical centre of Norfolk. It covers an area of and had a population of 2,415 in 783 households at the 2001 census, reducing to a population of 2,100 in 723 households at the 2011 Census. For the purposes of local government it is in the Elmham and Mattishall Division of Norfolk County Council and the Lincoln Ward of Breckland District Council. Swanton is a town in Franklin County, Vermont, United States. The population was 6,701 at the 2020 census. The town includes the village of Swanton. History The town of Swanton was chartered in 1763 as one of the New Hampshire Grants by Benning Wentworth, the governor of the Province of New Hampshire. It was named for Captain William Swanton, an officer in the British Army who had traveled through the area during the French and Indian War. There were French land grants in the area beginning in 1734, and small French settlements including a Catholic mission in what is now Swanton from as early as 1740, when settlers in Quebec used a water route from Quebec City and Montreal to reach the banks of the Missisquoi River near what are now known as Swanton Falls. U.S. Route 7 passes through the village as Grand Avenue, Canada Street, and Spring Street. To the north US 7 leads to its northern terminus at Interstate 89 just south of the Canada–United States border, and to the south it leads to St. Albans, the Franklin County seat.
