English is a West Germanic language of the Indo-European language family, with its earliest forms spoken by the inhabitants of early medieval England. Cedric Howell Swanton
Dr Cedric Howell Swanton (Kew, Victoria, 23 March 1899 - Sydney, 11 September 1970) was an Australian physician and psychiatrist. Biography Swanton was educated at Scotch College and the University of Melbourne, then went to the United Kingdom for postgraduate studies in surgery in London and Edinburgh. On his return to Australia in 1929 he worked as a general practitioner, but returned to London in 1933 to study psychiatry at the Tavistock Clinic. In 1937 he opened a practice in Sydney as a consultant psychiatrist and was appointed to the honorary staff of the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital psychiatric clinic, remaining there until retiring in 1959. Although trained in psychoanalysis, Swanton followed the theory of biological psychiatry, which maintained that mental problems were best treated by physical methods. Diane Swanton (born August 11, 1979, in Pretoria) is a South African sport shooter. She won the gold medal for trap shooting at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, Australia, with a games record of 72 points. Swanton also received a qualifying place for the Olympics by capturing the gold in the same category at the 2007 ISSF African Shooting Championships in Cairo, Egypt, defeating Namibia's Gaby Ahrens. Ernest William Brockton Swanton (28 June 1870, Dibden – 21 October 1958, Twickenham) was an English mycologist, botanist, conchologist, naturalist, antiquarian, and museum curator. He was the president of the British Mycological Society for the academic year 1915–1916 and the president of the Conchological Society of Great Britain and Ireland in 1921. Biography After an early career as a schoolmaster and private tutor, Swanton was appointed in 1897 the curator of the Haslemere Educational Museum. He retired as curator in 1948. In 1898 Swanton began giving regular series of lessons in natural history to children from the local elementary schools. He illustrated the lessons by handing around specimens from his museum's collections. In 1899 he established a Haslemere Educational Museum Examination for local children after their preparation for several months by studying the museum's galleries. Francis Swanton
Francis Swanton (c.1605 – 1661) was an English lawyer and politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1660 to 1661. Swanton was the son of William Swanton of Wincanton, Somerset and his wife Elizabeth Aubrey, daughter of Thomas Aubrey of Chaddenwicke, Wiltshire. He was a student of Middle Temple in 1630 and was called to the bar in 1638. He was Clerk of assize for the Western circuit from 1637 to 1656, J.P. for Wiltshire from about 1641 until his death and J.P. for Somerset from 1648 to 1657. His small estate was sequestrated because he had acted as clerk of assize under the Royalists during the Civil War but he managed to convincedthe sequestrators that he had acted under force majeure and was not only excused the fine but also allowed to continue in post. He was commissioner for assessment for Wiltshire from December 1649 to 1652 and was J.P. for Cornwall, Devon and Hampshire in 1651. Fred Wilder Swanton (1862–1940) was an entrepreneur and real estate developer who served as mayor of Santa Cruz, California from 1927 until 1933. He promoted the expansion of Santa Cruz as a beach resort city. The seaside resort he established in 1904 remains today as the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. (born John Richbourg, August 20, 1910 - February 15, 1986) was an American radio disc jockey who attained fame in the 1950s and 1960s for playing rhythm and blues music on Nashville radio station WLAC. He was also a notable record producer and artist manager. Richbourg was arguably the most popular and charismatic of the four announcers at WLAC who showcased popular African-American music in nightly programs from the late 1940s to the early 1970s. (The other three were Gene Nobles, Herman Grizzard, and Bill "Hoss" Allen.) Later rock music disc jockeys, such as Alan Freed and Wolfman Jack, mimicked Richbourg's practice of using speech that simulated African-American street language of the mid-twentieth century. Mary Hynes Swanton (22 June 1861 – 25 November 1940) was an Australian trade unionist. Biography Mary "Mamie" Hynes Swanton was born 22 June 1861 to James Swanton and Sarah Marie, née Connelly in Melbourne. Her father was a car proprietor and both parents were born in Ireland. She got her education through the Benedictine nuns. In 1889 was a tailoress in Western Australia. She went to a Women's suffrage meeting in Perth in 1896. Swanton became a member of the Australian Natives' Association. She went on to be the first woman to be awarded honorary life membership in 1900.
