Suonenjoki Rail Collision
The Suonenjoki rail collision occurred on 12 August 1998, when a VR InterCity train arriving from the north and a VR freight train arriving from the south collided south of the Suonenjoki railway station in Finland. 26 people were injured, one of them seriously. The rear end of the locomotive of the freight train was pushed high up in the air on top of its first car. Chronology of events VR's InterCity No. 72, ''en route'' from Iisalmi to Helsinki via Kouvola, was scheduled to pass VR freight train 2051 in Airaksela, north of Suonenjoki, with the freight train waiting on the passing loop and the InterCity using the main line. However, on the day of the accident the freight train was running 30 minutes late. Suonenjoki
Suonenjoki (; literally means "vein's river") is a town and municipality of Finland. It is located in the Northern Savonia region, southwest of the Kuopio city. The town has a population of () and covers an area of of which is water. The population density is . The municipality is unilingually Finnish. History Suonenjoki is thought to have served as a milestone in the Treaty of Nöteborg in 1323. The Jyväskylä rail accident occurred on 6 March 1998 in Jyväskylä, Finland, when the Sr1-driven express train P105 from Turku bound for Joensuu via Pieksämäki derailed. The train left the tracks after coming in too fast on a switch near the station. 300 people were on board (some sources say 500); the fireman driving the train and nine passengers were killed, and 94 passengers injured.
